Aug. 18th, 2024 10:23 pmReading. Tiiiny bit of Otherlands. The bit of it I have managed to read did make me laugh enough I wound up reading it to A, though.
Writing. ... 579 words, and more thoughts on structure...
Watching. Dead Boy Detectives S01E05. Particularly shrieked about (1) the cuts in the Previously on... ("Do you want to kiss Monty?" [contemplative look] [Charles smirking over his shoulder] "... I don't know") and (2) Edwin's adjusting of Charles' clothes with exactly the same gestures that the Cat King used on him in the previous episode. SUCH SUBTLETY.
Playing. Tiny bit of a replay of Never Alone, but that is being set to one side until such time as a second controller arrives; two run-throughs of Monster Loves You, about which most of what I have to say is "... what."
Cooking. New recipes: Ottolenghi's braised squash with chickpeas and harissa; smitten kitchen every day halloumi roast with aubergine, courgette, & tomatoes + barbecued yoghurt flatbread.
Eating. Ruby Violet marzipan + orange blossom ice cream: new-to-me flavour, which I am delighted to have tried but will probably not acquire more of! The hazelnut & hazelnut brittle, meanwhile, remains A Definite Favourite.
Making & mending. Applied gingko washi tape to the mashed-up box for my gingko-motif oracle deck.
Growing. The Final For This Year No Really attempt at growing some damn pumpkins has, thus far, yielded 3 seedlings, of which 2 are making an attempt at true leaves. This is encouraging.
Of the two peppers that I was sure had died of neglect when I went to an event and then couldn't drag myself to the plot for another week and change, the sweet pepper has survived and the poblano (alas) has not, but I do at least get another couple of poblano chillis off it, and those will actually last me at least another year at my current rate of use...
The one single solitary aubergine I managed to not kill is merrily growing more leaves. Goodness knows if it'll manage to actually produce any fruit before the weather turns.
A has been being extremely kind and herding me out of the door after lunch. Allotment currently less weedy than it's been in months.
Also! Stuck some basil seeds in some pots at home. Maybe they'll even germinate and not immediately fall victim to gastropods...
Observing. A juvenile green woodpecker on the lawn! A actually got a good enough look to ID it; I glimpsed it flying past while I was otherwise engaged and thought it was a slightly weird colour for a parakeet, but A actually managed photographs including its red cap!
Also ALLOTMENT FOX. I observed it Standing Up Suddenly in the middle of the road when I went to fill a watering can from the tank, but when I carefully turned away from it and Did Not Look Directly it stayed standing in the half-splayed-crouch state with AMAZING eyes SO close to me, and then settled back down when I walked away so A got to see it as well when I nudged him that direction on my return! ... and then a pigeon landed noisily in a hedge near it, and it jumped up and trotted over, gradually accelerating, and was Shit At Hunting and thus the pigeon got away.
