Getting to the pharmacy we use involves more-or-less going past the stretch of water (and the green) where lots of the local birds hang out. A had an IOU, and finishes work at 5ish; the pharmacy is open until 6.30 p.m. So after a small amount of faff, off we went.
As we were heading toward the green along the New River Loop (not new, nor river, nor loop) I heard baby coots before I spotted any coots at all and had to go back and hunt for them. I was mildly disgruntled to find a family with two adults and two teenagers, but we did not have to continue very much further on before we spotted THE FIVE TINY BABY FLUFFBALLS. Who were conveniently hanging around near one of the tiny bridges, so we could stop at a tiny bridge and lean on the railing and watch the exhibit Brownian motion and yell a lot.
At approximately this point A spotted a single solitary Canadian gosling, still in the Round And Yellow phase. I'd been mildly surprised to not see any of these the last few times I'd been by, and am not less surprised that there appears to be only one (1) of them, but this too was a delight.
And the Egyptian geese also obliged! I could see the two adults standing sentinel some way away from each other, and thought I could see a small nondescript brown blur in between them (largely because every single time I've been by so far that's how they've arranged themselves), and upon getting closer: yep, all four of the duck-sized goslings in a sleepy pile, occasionally awkwardly extending an inelegant wing still covered in pin feathers. It was wonderful.
