Yesterday, at the point at which the painstaking persimmon surgery had actually revealed the tiniest sliver of leaf, I took a photo:

a persimmon seedling, with seedling leaves just visible through the trimmed edge of the seed casing

Over the course of the day I'd used scissors to very gingerly keep snipping along the side of the seed until I was through into the nut meat, then tweezers to clear little bits of meat away, then returned the whole thing to its sauna before repeating some time later. At the point at which the white meat was exposed it became much easier to remove more chunks, but still: slow and steady.

This morning I finished clearing the seam of the seed casing back from where I first exposed leaves to the point where the stem was emerging from the seed. Even at this point the seedling leaves had started trying to haul themselves bodily out:

a persimmon seedling, with slightly more seed casing removed and substantially more obvious leaves

I have done no more actual removal -- I've poked very gently with tweezers and then made myself put them back down, so everything subsequent It Did By Itself.

Shortly before 5 p.m.:

the persimmon continues to doggedly extract itself from seed casing

And then twenty minutes ago at 11 p.m.:

SO MUCH LEAFS.

I am VERY PROUD and VERY EXCITED and extremely pleased with myself for managing to leave it be (as it were) at the stage at which I thought I'd done enough it could sort itself out, instead of continuing to actively fiddle with it past the point at which I could convince myself that what I was doing was necessary.

Still might die! This particular hurdle is very close to cleared, though.

Bonus plant content: the baby oak I dug up from one of my veg beds and stuck in a pot, and had assumed had died of shock given how much more advanced the one I didn't dig up is... has tiny brand new extremely fresh leaves, also spotted earlier today! Ergo: the Bonsai Oak Experiment has yet to conclude.

Hurray for persimmon, and hurray for tiny oak tree. (I have a whole tiny wood of rescued mini saplings and things grown from seed - 3 oaks, hawthorn, horse chestnut, two probably cherry-plums, ash, copper beech, willow grown from a twig stuck in the ground, and a hazel that's just settling in)
