Jan. 21st, 2024 10:01 pmReading. The House of Shattered Wings, Aliette de Bodard. I finished it! I... am trying to work out whether I want to get subsequent books in the series or just read plot summaries on the internet.
Decluttering at the Speed of Life, Dana K. White. FINALLY made it to the top of the library hold queue, and inhaled. If you don't want to read her entire blog archives this is a pretty good summary, and indeed I handed a couple of chunks to A for him to read.
Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis. I am now fascinated about the process of distilling and then reelaborating anecdotes, and the manipulation of the reader inherent in the details one chooses to project onto the core story, and the extent to which the idea of a "core story" is even meaningful. Enjoyed this; will probably read more of his stuff if it becomes available via the library; probably won't buy.
In progress, to various degrees, variously: What Happened To You?, Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey; Vicious, VE Schwab; A Stroke of the Pen, Terry Pratchett (technically); and a reread of The Body Keeps The Score, Bessel van der Kolk.
Listening. Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, S01E05. We remain dubious.
Playing. Octodad: Dadliest Catch. This was recommended to me An Age ago; so far we have played the first two levels, with no small degree of bafflement, and are going to see what official co-op mode is like now we're back in a space with auxiliary controllers.
Many Scrabble, as is right and proper and traditional.
Cooking. I really have got the hang of the confit tandoori chickpeas. \o/
Eating. Many food not cooked by me but also a shout-out to Gwella Dairy, whose ice cream is not as good as Ruby Violet's but still, nonetheless, pretty good (we tried blackcurrant, hazelnut, and then honeycomb and separately coffee for A). Trad Gear Farm pasty and bonus slice of cake. Chips and hot chocolate (and flapjack) on Poldhu.
Exploring. Gunwalloe! The village, with particular respect to the pottery on the opposite margin of it! The Little Shed Shop! Also we made a flying visit to the Seal Sanctuary on our way back upcountry (had not previously observed a baby playing with its food!).
Observing. Choughs (which were delightfully obliging)! Seal behaviour! Jupiter! Interesting beach geometries! (All three next to each other had unusually pronounced lagoons and sand bars.)

Date: 2024-01-21 11:57 pm (UTC)I remember feeling pretty ambivalent about The House of Shattered Wings... I read the rest of the series, I'm pretty sure, but enjoyed the spin-off novellas quite a bit more.
