ergo least bad option appears to be: a Car Hat, for putting over the entire thing to prevent Ingress Of Water

what we need next: a time when the car is dry and it isn't raining and, crucially, we notice both of these facts... so we can actually put the hat on. we did not achieve that this afternoon.

(I am very very tired and very brain-wobbly out of all proportion to any stimulus and think I am having Migraine-Associated Symptoms and they are very tedious.)

A few basic tests if you can get creative with cardboard boxes and kitchen roll or toilet paper, is to put a layer of cardboard raised off the base of the boot, with your preferred blotting paper tacked down to it, then leave it out in the rain and see if you can narrow down the problem area.

My last car would leak somewhere around the front pillar of the driver's door, especially when moving with a lot of rain (fortunately quite rare here). I mostly ignored it because it didn't happen often enough and I assumed the primary cause was ancient rubber door seals (the car was old enough to vote before it was finally scrapped).
