Nov. 12th, 2023 10:01 pmCelebrating. A ninth (?!?!?!) anniversary!
Reading. NEARLY DONE WITH OCTOBER DAYE. Just started The Innocent Sleep today; will probably finish it in time to launch straight into NEW MURDERBOT. This week's gripe is about characters being awful: specifically, Toby's total lack of self-awareness about the bit where her daughter... vanished... so she's having a New Baby... is extremely wince-inducing. Yes it's not a planned pregnancy, but nonetheless worrying more about how you're going to tell your housemates than about how you are going to tell your literal extant daughter with whom you are uncritically replicating the pattern with your parents that fucked you up so badly SURE IS A WHOLE ENTIRE CHOICE and it does not make me think well of you, Toby, that telling Gillian at all just Does Not appear to be a consideration for you.
Like: obviously I have read the whole thing. I am in fact these days willing to DNF books. Andbut: that is of course why I am so frustrated by all the ways I think It Could Be Better. Alas.
Also Digger (Ursula Vernon), chapter 7. (This is going slowly because we have the massive omnibus hardback open on one lap with the other person craning to also see, so more than a chapter at a time isn't really ergonomically viable -- but we are enjoying ourselves a very great deal.)
Playing. We do not have the brain for anything other than Fluxx at the moment, but we had several more rounds of Fluxx and had a great deal of fun with Today's Special! in particular.
Cooking. Apples. SO MANY APPLES. So far I have made two rounds of Apfelmus (one for my mother, one for me) and prepped one dehydrator load to run overnight. We... very much did bring home 25.5kg of the things, though, so I am going to be at this for... a while.
At the beginning of the week: poached quince in spiced wine syrup, which we ate with mascarpone. Excellent; will do again.
Eating. A came home from errands the other day with a box of baklava from a new patisserie in town! ... alas it is not The Best Baklava, but I am definitely pleased to have Tried it.
Making & mending. A WHOLE ENTIRE NET. OUT OF BITS OF STRING.
Growing. Not much time at the allotment, between migraine and Weather, but I did spend Saturday afternoon pottering around my mother's garden with her. Brought home: 25.5kg of apples (as above), two tiny rosemary cuttings (because I failed to stick the one I brought back up from Cornwall into soil soon enough), one thyme plant (because my last attempt to bring one home also failed...), and two types of (rooted!) honeysuckle for A's mother.
