Feb. 12th, 2023 11:01 pmReading. This One Sky Day, Leone Ross, slowly. Unlike this time last week, I have been swept up rather by it and am now entranced; I very badly hope that I will love it a lot but I am holding my breath, metaphorically, until the ending. (I typed "resolution", first, but that seems -- I hope it will turn out to be -- too pat; "ending", a process ongoing, feels closer to right.)
Cooking. Continuing to make So Many New Foods.
At the beginning of the week, to go with the final portion of cauliflower cake: approximately butter beans with kale, lemon, chilli, and garlic. I once again found myself actively disappointed that there wasn't more of it. Apparently I like kale now.
More things from East: mushroom ma po tofu; coconut rice with aubergine and pickled cucumber; the autumn pilau. I want to have another go at the ma po tofu, probably with some tweaks; A was very fond of the aubergine; the autumn pilau is tasty but we are not quite as astonished by it as we were by the winter pilau.
We also experimented with a recipe for Dishoom's house black dal, except that after stirring it for half an hour on the hob I did leave it to slow-cook in the Instant Pot for somewhere over twenty hours, before finishing it with the cream. We are happy with this! I have frozen a portion to compare with Meera Sodha's vegan black dal recipe! It goes very well with the aloo paratha, which I have now definitely got the hang of.
Eating. Several helpings of Ruby Violet ice cream. Malted milk and the apricot rice pudding; today's was peach and rosewater sorbet plus the passionfruit mojito sorbet.
Making & mending. My bike now has new mudguard stays and shrieks less; it also has a frame lock that works.
Observing. Four starlings! Busying themselves on the lawn! And a couple of coal tits bouncing around above their heads.
