Reading. A fic! Specifically: The Cunning of the Goose is Immeasurable; Its Mischief Infinite. Yuletide just gone, 1133 words of Piranesi/Untitled Goose Game crossover. It was delightful.

A Slob Comes Clean, via [personal profile] rmc28. I am reading a handful of posts and then getting up and doing something, rinse and repeat; for the moment, at least, I am managing a Much Tidier Kitchen and have done Several Rearrangements of other space. I do not expect any of this to stick, necessarily -- I'm pretty sure that a lot of what's going on is that my non-migraine chronic pain is halfway controlled for the first time since about May 2021 -- but it's really nice while it lasts.

I am also continuing to pick at Spirals in Time, by Helen Scales. It is an ongoing mix of Excellent Snail Facts (feat. other molluscs as necessary; e.g. limpets use their shells to stamp on the feet of predatory starfish!) and "... did you seriously just--" (e.g. using the past tense to talk about very much living cultures in ways that are... not best practice).

Playing. I got today's Redactle, #291, in one guess. I am Extremely Smug. (I looked at it and my brain just Supplied the whole first sentence.)

Cooking. MANY EXCITING THINGS. Partly because of The Marmalade Situation and partly because my Improved Functioning and Adam's desire to be A Household That Gets Veg Boxes means I find myself trying to come up with ways to use up things I don't normally cook with, e.g. kale.

This combined well with SousChef's ongoing January Sale, specifically in that I finally acquired a copy of Meera Sodha's East, which I'm pretty sure was recommended to me by [personal profile] wildeabandon via [personal profile] simont. Conveniently, a recipe for Sri Lankan beetroot curry (with coconut and lime) is on the page before one for leek, mushroom and kale subji; it so happened that in addition to kale, we had some leek and some mushroom and some beetroot that all needed using up. So! We had those along with the aloo paratha that went Perfectly and cauliflower butter masala, with Madhur Jaffrey's carrot & pea curry and, separately, lentils to bulk out as we finished some things up faster than others.

Kale has also gone into confit tandoori chickpeas, where it was an entirely acceptable Green Leafy Vegetable, chucked into the pan and stirred through about fifteen minutes before serving. I liked the additional Green and I broadly liked the bonus textural contrast; I am not sure that I would go out of my way to buy kale especially, but since we have it this is a Perfectly Fine thing to do with it.

Kale also featured in brunch today. I'd been going to do some of the More Mushrooms with onion and garlic, as I usually do, but then realised we had a whole bunch of leek that could also do with eating and could perfectly well be an allium in place of the onion, and then I went "ooh, and I could add some kale--" and it was not until it was all in the pan that I realised I had recreated dinner from earlier in the week only spiced differently. *facehands* (More breakfast: fresh bread, halloumi, tomatoes, scrambled egg.)

And then! tonight's special adventure! was FONDUE, using a fondue set very generously given us by [personal profile] juggzy. I had mentioned to A, with amusement, that a friend was giving away a fondue set, fully expecting the answer to be "where would we PUT IT." This was, it transpires, foolish: I was informed that we would be delighted to have me find it house room, so we collected it Sunday last and used it to make dinner today, with a wide variety of Vegetable Cronch that outstripped our appetites to the extent that we're going to do the same again tomorrow to finish them off. :) (Boiled potatoes; two kinds of sourdough, one somewhat agèd and therefore excellent for this purpose, even had it not been my second and more successful attempt at another sourdough potato bread flavoured with rosemary and nigella; cucumber; carrot; pepper; red chicory; raw mushroom; dried apple; cherry tomatoes; a gherkin for me. Also a green salad.)

Oh! And I had two goes at another potato sourdough recipe; it transpires that baking potatoes leaves them much less Moist than boiling them, shockingly enough. :)

Making & mending. This week I got my swift out and actually used it, for the first time since acquiring it -- I had some knitted items that needed frogging. Gosh but that made a potentially frustrating and tedious job both easier and faster. I now have a small pile of centre-wound balls and some idea of what I want to do with them, and I am very glad to have decided to give this bit of kit house room!

-- oh! And at A's behest I applied the whetstone to the Utility Scissors, and they are now much more effective, which is very welcome!

Observing. Excellent frost-ferns on the car, and splatter-patterns by puddles where the puddle itself was not quite frozen through but the splashes originating from it did; a very great many spectacular sunsets, that I have very much enjoyed just gawping at.
