Jan. 15th, 2023 11:00 pmReading. Dreamwidth! I have now read All Of December and yesterday, at least, I was caught up to the present in terms of January. (Today has been busy and I have yet to go see how talkative you all have been. :-p)
I have also, after grumbling about the prologue last week, actually continued making (slow) progress with Spirals in Time (Helen Scales). Happily as of the first chapter I started getting enough GoodSnail Shell Facts that I started taking notes (because looking back on notes about Good Facts makes me smile). Currently I am having the mathematics of spiral shells explained to me -- sufficiently well that I have had an "... oh!!!" moment about bivalve (e.g. clam) shells also being spirals, just with parameters that result in What Clams Look Like, instead of what e.g. land snails look like. This is very pleasing and I am enjoying myself a lot.
Playing. We have peered suspiciously at Chroma 2.08 but have not actually made progress, as such, upon it yet. A game of Scrabble last night, with my mother and A, in which my mother taught me the very useful word zax.
Cooking. Mostly this week we have been eating a big pot of tagine I made on Tuesday. I peeled and sliced apples for a Strudel my mother made for us; I have cooked very little else.
Eating. Apfelstrudel! An interesting lentil-and-chickpea-and-squash stew, for which I intend to Obtain the recipe. Ribiselkuchen, made with buckwheat. A surprisingly-to-me excellent fig & dolcelatte nut roast Thing at The Plough in Fen Ditton (hurrah for almost entirely deserted outside seating).
Exploring. Rather more of the back roads of Fen Ditton than we'd intended! And a very pleasant walk at Wimpole, where there are lots of bulbs determinedly putting forth leaves; some actual snowdrops; and a lot of excellent mushrooms misc.
Making & mending. I decided I could not face going back to my optician & getting them to further adjust the earpieces on my glasses, so I took a deep breath, reminded myself that I do actually know how thermoplastics work, and dunked them in a bowl of hot water and tweaked them myself. They no longer slide egregiously down my nose, which the first adjustment at the optician's aimed to fix, and they also do not hurt to wear any more! So that is a win.
Observing. Alas we did not witness my mother's resident goldfinches in the flesh (though we did get a photo of them), but we did see the fox and a great tit! I also said hello to my middle brother's snake, and we greatly enjoyed the sheep at Wimpole. A, who was in his misspent youth a boatie, enjoyed watching the river while we ate lunch. :)
