Backdated entry

Three of us got our annual flu vax today; this was slightly less organised than it might have been, and if I'd realised that the web page wasn't going to send the bookings through correctly (we got our confirmation SMSes after we got home) then I might have just tried walk-in (which the sign out the front says they are doing). Very much appreciate that for this month and next flu vax is free for everyone so we don't have to do the 'who is covered' thing. Reminder for Aussies -- flu vax! Get one if you haven't!

addendum Youngest attempted the walk in option, it was even less organised, which I didn't realise was possible.

For those who don't know, Quantum Bang is a super-sized version of Big Bang (fic productions, not the TV show). Stories are written in a variety of fandoms, and most are epic in length, with a number of art illustrations. Some will eventually appear on AO3, but some remain only on the QB site.

For the next two weeks, two (or sometimes three) stories will be posted each day. Here's a list of the titles, and what fandom is represented, that will be posted.

https://quantumbang.org/2025-posting-schedule/

Every year I tell myself to let people know, and every year I fritter away the time. This year, I'm finally taking a minute to actually make a post. And if you don't see anything that piques your interest, click on the Fiction Index to check out stories from the past six years.

Happy reading!

1. I made rhubarb custard pie today with the rhubarb we got yesterday from the farmers market. It didn't even use half the rhubarb, so we've got a ton left to make a cake or something as well.

2. Tuxie has been spending more and more time away from our yard. Last weekend he was away for a couple days, then came back for one day, then has been gone the rest of the week. Because he's been spending more time away and often when he's here, not acting as hungry, I'm confident that he's being fed somewhere else and if he did disappear for good, it would be because he's decided to stay at his new home permanently (maybe even to become an indoor cat, which I would love for him), and I wouldn't be worried the way I might have been if he just disappeared without warning. But he was back today and spent the whole day in the yard and got several meals. I hope he continues to spend at least some time here!

This week, the "currently making" part of this update makes a comeback! Yay!!

As I explained in detail in a previous post, my week was pretty hectic, so I took advantage of the weekend to catch up on my shows. But I also wanted to make at least a little progress on my secret craft project… and I did!

Currently making

I already have the pattern, and now all that's left is transferring it to the fabric so I can start. Though I’ll admit, this is going to be a test run because I’ve been going back and forth on the background color I want to use. I’ll try my usual style: black fabric with colorful contrasting thread. I’ll see how it turns out, but I think it might look better with a pale blue or even white background, though I don’t love embroidering on white fabric… If I make more progress during the week, I’ll share photos.

Currently reading

  • SVSSS Vol. 2 - Chapter 10

Currently watching
  • Winter Begonia (Chinese drama) – Weekly, weekends – 29/49 episodes
  • Break Up Service (Thai drama) – Weekly, Mondays – 8/12 episodes
  • Leap Day (Thai drama) – Weekly, Tuesdays – 8/12 episodes
  • My Stubborn (Thai BL drama) – Weekly, Sundays – 7/12 episodes
  • Boys in Love (Thai BL drama) – Weekly, Sundays – 7/12 episodes
  • The Ex-Morning (Thai BL drama) – Weekly, Thursdays – 2/10 episodes
  • The Bangkok Boy (Thai BL drama) – Weekly, Saturdays – 2/12 episodes

I’m really enjoying SVSSS, and I think part of it is that, despite it being one of the popular novels, I’ve been really good at avoiding spoilers. So I know the names of the main characters (some of them) and who the main couple is, but beyond that, I have no idea what’s going to happen or how. Plus, I love the meta-literary aspect, the commentary through Shen Yuan/Peerless Cucumber’s self-awareness, lol. It makes me think a lot about hypothetical scenarios where I’d be transported into different kinds of books and how I’d react. Like, what if I suddenly found myself in a gothic novel? How would my knowledge of the canon affect my survival in that world? Or, say, in The Witcher novels... as someone who doesn’t believe in the supernatural, getting dropped into a universe full of ghosts and monstrous creatures? Yeah, I wouldn’t last long, haha. But anyway, it’s fun how much this book makes me think.

I also wonder if I’d be enjoying it as much if this were the first novel of its kind I’d ever read. At this point, I’m at least familiar with some of the tropes and elements of the narrative. Maybe I haven’t read the exact type of novel Shen Yuan gets transported into, but having read Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know before, I know they exist, and that their protagonists would probably annoy me, lol. Though one of the fun things about SVSSS is how Shen Qingqiu’s intervention completely changes certain aspects of Luo Binghe. Maybe I’m just rambling, but I’m having fun.

I just finished episodes 27, 28, and 29 of Winter Begonia, and they were intense. I cried during all three, though for different reasons. I adore Charmaine Sheh, and I love that Fan Xiang’er is such a complex character. Sometimes she frustrates me, but I can’t help feeling some sympathy for her, especially since she’s not some helpless damsel. Cheng Fengtai also drives me crazy sometimes, but in these episodes, he got into trouble for helping others, and well… I can’t deny I enjoy seeing him in uncomfortable situations. I also loved seeing him emotionally wrecked… frustrated, heartbroken, miserable. What can I say? I have a weakness for watching pretty men suffer (in fiction). I absolutely adore Shang Xirui, he’s THE character, and I love him. But yeah, these episodes made me cry. Not that it’s news… I’m an easy crier, lol.

Yesterday, I caught up with The Ex-Morning and Boys in Love, and today I watched this week’s episodes of Boys in Love and My Stubborn.

My Stubborn is turning out to be so much fun, and in the seven weeks it’s been airing (wait, what? Almost two months already? When did that happen?), every single episode has had at least one NC scene. But that’s not even its main appeal, it’s just genuinely entertaining to watch Sorn hopelessly obsessed, in love, and head-over-heels for Jun (whose name I’ve seen spelled at least three different ways in the subtitles…) without being able to say it explicitly (well, using words… because otherwise it’s been pretty explicit… okay okay I’ll see myself out) and how their relationship evolves (even if it’s just a little bit at a time). They’re both stubborn in their own ways, lol. And Sorn is a walking red flag, but he’s got his own charm. I’m dying to see him beg and suffer for Jun, but we’ll see. Sorry, this man totally brings out my mean side.

Boys in Love is still so cute, and I really like how they handle certain themes, like Mon’s rebelliousness and his mother’s concern. Sometimes it’s frustrating, I’ll admit, but that’s exactly why I like it… it reflects how being a teenager is complicated, how parenting a teenager is complicated, and how navigating that relationship isn’t always easy. I also love Shane’s internal conflict, Kit’s expectations, and how they deal with the struggles of their new relationship. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d get hooked on this teen-themed series because I usually prefer shows about adults dealing with adult problems (even in BL-land, which is maybe why I connect more with Japanese series in that sense), but I really like it. It’s a great Sunday watch. Plus, I love Papang, and even though Nut and Tan’s relationship is a subplot, I’m invested. In today’s episode, I couldn’t help but relate to Tan’s insecurities… I just wanted to hug him. I’d love it if they got their own spin-off series someday (though maybe that’s asking too much.)

Leap Day and Break Up Service are still really entertaining, though Leap Day gives me a bit of anxiety, lol. It’s stressful because so many bad things happen, and the main characters keep narrowly escaping death. But it’s made me appreciate Pond and Gun even more. I like seeing these guys in something different from BL, and I also wish they didn’t always have fixed pairings for BL shows. But hey, wishful thinking. I know that system sells, and I’d be lying if I said I don’t absolutely adore the mascots, for example.

Finally, The Ex-Morning is really growing on me! I love that the couple starts off as exes with unresolved baggage (we don’t know why they broke up yet…), and it’s so obvious they’re both still hurting even though the love is clearly still there. Now they’re forced to work together on a TV show to salvage Padtaphi’s (Krist) reputation… and career. This series is my introduction to KristSingto, and I have to admit, I love watching actors in their 30s. Also, can we talk about Singto? So unfairly attractive. That black high-neck sweater in the first episode? Chef’s kiss.

I’m seriously considering waiting until The Bangkok Boy finishes so I can binge it, but I haven’t decided yet. I’m already way behind, and I haven’t had much time. Sometimes I feel like I’m juggling too many things, so every now and then, I have to let one drop :(

Anyway, that’s the weekly update!

This is a companion to my entry on the types of TLS seen for incoming email; this is for May 2025 because that's when the data I'm using comes from. This data covers nine days and about 12,800 external mail deliveries that originated from people (instead of from things like mail forwarding), and I'm going to be rounding numbers off for my own reasons.

Of those external deliveries, almost all of them used some form of TLS; basically 99% (call it 12,675, although it turns out a bunch of those should be ignored for reasons beyond the scope of this entry). Almost all of the 'real' messages used TLS 1.3; 89% used TLS 1.3 and 11% used TLS 1.2, with no other TLS versions used. Interestingly, the outgoing top level signature schemes are different than the incoming ones:

  5240 X=TLS1.3:ECDHE_SECP256R1
  2530 X=TLS1.3:ECDHE_X25519
   660 X=TLS1.2:ECDHE_SECP256R1
   220 X=TLS1.2:ECDHE_X25519
    18 X=TLS1.2:RSA
     5 X=TLS1.2:ECDHE_SECP384R1
     4 X=TLS1.2:ECDHE_SECP521R1
     2 X=TLS1.3:ECDHE_SECP384R1
     2 X=TLS1.2:DHE_CUSTOM2048

The destinations that used TLS 1.2 are much more assorted than I would have expected and they make me wonder about the cipher preferences that our Ubuntu 22.04 version of Exim is telling servers about. On the other hand, some of the surprising ones are symmetrical; for example, people at Amazon appear to genuinely be using TLS 1.2 both when receiving email from us and when sending email to their correspondents here (amazonses.com uses TLS 1.3 for outgoing email, but amazon.com doesn't seem to).

We send a lot of email to some places. One of them is hosted by Microsoft, and uses TLS 1.3 with ECDHE SECP256R1; another is GMail, which (with us) uses TLS 1.3 with ECDHE X25519. These distort the overall outgoing statistics, although there is probably a similar effect for our incoming email. Now that I'm poking at these logs, I've wound up feeling that a real analysis would have to look at the organizations running the MX targets of the domains (which is too much work for me for now).

The non-TLS destinations are mostly some groups within the university who seem to still have (old) mail servers that haven't been set up with TLS for various reasons. There are a few outside organizations, including a university or two that surprise me.

(These statistics are less interesting than I was hoping, but so it goes sometimes. I don't know unless I go look.)

The Queer Wild West

Jun. 2nd, 2025 01:39 am
[syndicated profile] alpennia_feed

Posted by Heather Rose Jones

Sunday, June 1, 2025 - 18:00

I'm starting coverage of a new book today, about how queer the Old West actually was and how that got hidden. At this point--thanks to my retirement work-schedule--I'm keeping my blog buffer full enough that I can commit to posting something every day for Pride month, just as I did when I kicked off the Project back in 2014. Well, actually, in 2014 I started posting on June 9, so I didn't actually post every day that month. I think maybe I did the whole month in some other year?

2014??? I've been doing the Lesbian Historic Motif Project for over a decade! I think last year I only noticed that well after the anniversary had passed, so I didn't do anything special. I like celebrating significant numbers, but I'm not so good about noticing when they happen.

On the fiction side, I've revised the first 4 (of 7) stories for Skin-singer: Tales of the Kaltaoven and am feeling quite confident about the project. I'm also noticing that I'd done at least one previous revision pass. Well, there's always something more to improve. It really is proving that what I needed wasn't so much time as the mental energy to get back to the fiction writing.

Boag, Peter. 2011. Re-Dressing America's Frontier Past. University of California Press, Berkeley. ISBN 978-0-520-27062-6

Introduction: A Trip Along the Pike’s Peak Express – Cross-Dressers and America’s Frontier Past

The chapter opens with an anecdote about Horace Greeley (tagline: Go west, young man!) in 1859 checking out those who had actually followed his advice and speaking with a Colorado gold prospector who had decided to return back east. After the interview, he was informed that the prospector he’d been talking to was a woman.

This book explores such people in the American West who crossed gender in various ways. A major theme is that cross-dressers (the author’s term) were a common part of daily life in the West. A secondary topic is how, when, and why this simple fact was erased from US history. [Note: In conflating a wide variety of motivations and understandings of gender-crossing, Boag uses the term “cross-dressing” without intending to apply any particular interpretation on the individual instances. Thus “cross-dressing woman” is a person assigned female who dresses in male clothing and vice versa. I will follow this terminology for clarity. This is not meant to indicate any interpretation about individual identity.]

One inspiration for doing this study was the debate around the movie Brokeback Mountain regarding whether the same-sex relationship depicted was historically accurate—a debate grounded in generations of hyper-masculine cowboy characters in media. In contrast to the Hollywood image, Kinsey’s survey of sexual behavior found that male same-sex relations were more common in rural communities than urban ones.

The disconnect, Boag posits, comes from the conjunction of two events: the ending of the overall westward migration that defined the “frontier,” and the rise of sexological understandings of homosexual and heterosexual—both factors occurring around the turn of the 20th century. Both events are somewhat illusory. The end of the “Frontier” stood in for a variety of economic and social changes. And the popular embrace of sexological models was gradual and inconsistent. Even as westward movement slowed, the fictionalization of the “Wild West” began through performances and popular media.

Changes in the popular understanding of sexuality came from a combination of the shift from the one-gender model to the two-gender model (see Laqueur) by around 1800, and the theorizing that same-sex desire was caused by “inversion” of the sexual impulse, developing in the later 19th century. The medicalization and pathologization of same-sex desire became linked to theories about social decay and the stresses of modernization. Thus, according to this theory, same-sex desire would not occur in the “unspoiled” “natural” environment of the western frontier.

This framing required explanations for the observable fact of frequent cross-dressing in frontier cultures, which were resolved by a program of redefining the participants as heterosexual. Women who cross-dressed, by this framing, did so because success in the West required male disguise. Men who cross-dressed were a more difficult problem. It was addressed variously by erasure and the association of gender variance with non-white populations. Historians colluded in revising the story of the West as being the triumph of white male farmers, marrying and building communities.

The introduction finishes with a detailed case study of one individual who illustrates the issues and explanations discussed in the book.

Alberta Lucille Hart was born in 1840 to parents who had recently “reverse-migrated” from Oregon to Kansas. After the death of the father, the mother and child returned to Oregon where they had relatives. Hart enjoyed male-coded play and activities, enjoyed sports, despised housework, and began self-identifying as “the man of the family” (despite her mother remarrying). In addition to desiring to dress in male clothing and adopting a male hairstyle, Hart had a series of crushes and erotic fantasies centered on the female domestic servants in the household.

In response to teasing at school, Hart focused on excelling academically and graduated at the top of her class, continuing the pattern of crushes on female teachers and classmates. Academic success continued at college, where Hart formed a close relationship with classmate Eva Cushman. Their relationship was the subject of semi-friendly teasing and gossip. It became sexual, and when they were apart Hart wrote daily love letters to Cushman. Due to an inheritance from her late father, Hart was not only able to attend Stanford University, but to pay for Cushman to attend with her.

At university, Hart began adopting more masculine dress and activities, such as smoking and drinking, which resulted in Cushman gradually drawing away. [Note: Cushman’s reactions suggest that she understood herself to be involved with a woman, and the Hart’s increasing shift to male-presenting identity was not what she had signed up for. However it’s also possible to interpret her behavior as reacting to specific behaviors, rather than to female masculinity itself.] Hart regularly visited San Francisco for its nightlife and began a sexual relationship with a dancer there. This profligate lifestyle left Hart broke by graduation. She returned to Oregon and worked a variety of jobs to return to solvency then entered medical college as the only woman in her class. Again, she dealt with hazing by excelling academically and gaining highest honors.

The relationship with Cushman was completely over by this point and there was a series of unsuccessful romantic and sexual relationships with women and one extremely unsuccessful experiment with a man.

Hart’s medical studies led her to sexological writings, which resulted in depression regarding her own sexuality. She sought psychological treatment, but she laid out as a condition that she had no intention of changing her “masculine ambitions and tastes.” Her doctor agreed to focus on completing Hart’s transition into a man, including a hysterectomy. Hart chose to use the name Alan and shifted completely to a male presentation. In 1918, Hart gave a newspaper interview about his history and experiences, stating that he realized he must be one sex or the other, not “dual sex.”

This publicity raised questions of how law and society should treat Hart—for example, would he be subject to the military draft (which women were not)? Of course, “passing women” in the military were a long tradition.

Hart enjoyed a long medical career, with some speed bumps when rumor or notoriety caught up with him. Hart also published four medical-related novels, including one involving a gay man that may have been somewhat autobiographical. Eventually Hart settled into a long-term position in Connecticut where he served as director of a state health office up to his death in 1962 at age 72. Hart had one brief marriage in 1918, then a longer one starting in 1925 and lasting until his death.

Hart’s well-documented life was characterized in various ways by others: cross-dresser, homosexual, and “invert” (as “transsexual” was not yet in use until much later in his life). There is no clear documentation of how he categorized himself other than clearly considering himself a man. Across Hart’s lifetime, nomenclature and categories developed, shifted, and proliferated.

The author discusses Judith Butler’s ideas about gender as performance. In this context, to perform as male is to be male. Yet performance is not permanent or stable. In this context, cross-dressing can simultaneously disrupt the binary while also confirming it.

Popular media is the key source of information, not only for the existence of cross-dressing, but for documenting its reception. The author notes his potentially problematic use of “cross-dressing” to cover a disparate range of behaviors and identities. He notes that his use of pronouns will follow the understanding of how the person identified, but will sometimes reflect how they presented at various life stages.

Boag also takes note of the term “progress narrative,” which refers to framings of a personal story that characterize cross-dressing as done for a practical purpose unrelated to sexuality or gender identity.

I seem to have been collecting more links than usual this week. In my defense, between headache, potential ulcer, and sheer stress, I have had little writing inspiration.

Writerly Ways

Inspiration can hit mid chapter. In my author's zoom meetings you often hear 'my scene took an unexpected twist' which probably sounds bizarre to non-authors. How does a scene go somewhere you didn't imagine? Well I'm here to tell you it does, even for plotters (which two of our number are and it was the plotter and the pantser (me) who had this happen this week).

Maybe it has to do with 'being in the zone' or whatever you like to call it. Authors will know what I mean. Time falls away. The only thing you're aware of it words spilling onto the page and suddenly there it is, something you hadn't thought of until that moment and a lot of times it's just what your story needed (sometimes it isn't but I find writing it out, getting it out of my head, kills that side bar and I can slice it out later.

This week on the fly I decided 'yeah the fantasy-mystery thing isn't flowing, let's try something new.' Another thing in these zoom meetings is at least 3 of us have gotten agents and the publishers are already demanding book 2 before book 1 is even fully edited. So I thought to myself, you're fixing up book 1 now. Maybe you should start book 2 NOW in case you find yourself in this position and you're not stuck crapping out book 2 in a rush (I do wonder if that's half the reason for 'the sophomore blues' in so many book 2s)

Book 2 starts out much darker than I intended (but that's a post for another time) and I have Grace being really rattled. That's when it occurs to me that unlike her three partners in the monster hunting biz, Grace wasn't born into the organization like the others. She's an outsider recruited into it. And a side quest is born. Grace doubting if she's where she belongs can be a decent subplot and give her something more to do (I struggled with her in book one) Sometimes inspiration just goes that way, coming out of nowhere.

Summer Reading Program!

When I was a kid, the library summer reading program was one of my favorite events of the year. First of all, there were the events at the library, which were not only a lot of fun but also ensured that I got taken to the library at least once a week. Secondly, being encouraged to read lots of books and keep a list of the books that I read was a great thing for a hyperlexic kid. I'm like "Yes! Please reward me for something I want to do anyway!"

I've seen a number of people on social media talking about they wished there were things like the library summer reading program and the Scholastic book fair for grown-ups, and now there is! The American Historical Association is holding a Summer Reading Challenge!

The challenge is to complete at least three tasks from this list between June 1 and Labor Day:

  1. Read a history of an event with a major anniversary in 2025.
  2. Read a history of a resistance movement.
  3. Read a history that uses material culture.
  4. Read an edited collection, journal forum, or other multi-author work.
  5. Read a history that's been sitting on your shelf too long.
  6. Read a piece of historical fiction (novel, story, poem, play)

Right now I'm mentally taking task 5 off the table, because unless I go out and buy a new book for the challenge (which I don't anticipate doing), all of the books I read will be histories that have been sitting on my shelf too long.

I got started today, starting to read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, with a goal to finish it by the end of June.

You can read more about the AHA's 2025 Summer Reading Challenge here, and if you see the hashtag "#AHAReads" around your social media, now you know what it is.

Just got back from seeing Stephen Sondheim's Assassins, which is being put on by Fuse Theatre Ensemble, a queer theater group here in Portland.

I have no idea what Sondheim et al. originally conceived of the role of the Proprietor to be, but I can confidently say that the role was clearly meant to be played by a drag queen cosplaying America (Quesa D'Mondays). Larger than life in a sequin stars-and-stripes bustier, handing out guns, hugging people to her bosom, and whispering in their ears about Fame and Glory and the American Dream. Choices were made, and they were inspired.

I also had to laugh (never having seen the play before), that here we have yet another instance of Sondheim writing a beautiful love song that, in context, is one of the most fucked-up things you've ever heard.

Anyway, I enjoyed the production thoroughly. A couple of the voices had trouble competing with the orchestra, but not so much that I didn't enjoy the music, and there were supertitles for the lyrics/text, which was nice for catching all of Sondheim's wordplay. It runs for another two weeks, if anyone else is in town and might enjoy a fucked-up gremlin of a show about presidential assassinations (and doesn't mind prop guns too much).

All their examples of sexually explicit material is related to queer stories.

You can see their press release on the topic here.

Albertans have the opportunity to provide feedback until June 6, 2025 via a survey that can be found here.

If you’re Albertan, please tell them that this idea is horrendous and that you do not stand behind them on this.

If you’re not Albertan, please signal boost this so Albertans who haven’t heard about this can have their say.

Some points worth making that you can use:

  • Book banning takes away parent choice of what their kids are allowed to read by restricting the books available to kids. It should be the job of the parent, not the government, to decide what a kid can read.
  • Instead of banning books, parents should talk to their kids (and if they want, the kids’ librarian) about what they believe is appropriate vs inappropriate for their specific child/children. It’s their job to monitor what their kids are reading, not the government’s job.
  • Librarians are trained professionals who literally attend semester-long classes on how to choose books to purchase for their library. Are they saying that their training/professional judgement can’t be trusted? If so, what are they employed for?

Thanks in advance,

An Albertan school librarian

>Join a union

>Hear people constantly complaining that the current union leadership is super corrupt, it’s all just the same ten guys making all the decisions in secret and nobody else in the union ever gets to know what’s going on

>Go to the monthly union meetings that are completely open to all 1200 union members

>The only attendees are the same ten guys every month, giving detailed reports about everything that’s going on

This is both literally the case at far more than OP’s workplace and a metaphor for every political process/etc ever.

I spent several hours today not knowing where my towel was. I knew I'd taken it down to the laundry room and brought it out from the washer, and somewhere between the dryer and my apartment, it disappeared. Couldn't be found. I went back and checked, and didn't find it. I figured it wasn't a huge loss, all things considered, and tried to move on.

I just went back to check to be sure, and somewhere between the washer and the dryer, it got misplaced without leaving the laundry room, because that's where I found it. Someone had tossed it into the garbage bin - not even hanging it over the sink, but tossing it out entirely, which has me irritated on the general principle of throwing out a good hand towel being a bad idea because hey, free towel.

It's also got me relieved because I again know where my towel is. I couldn't well go hitchhiking otherwise.
