Reading. Phoenix Extravagant, Yoon Ha Lee. I think... I'm interested in the world-building in a way that lingers, but the actual characters and relationships didn't ever quite work for or make sense to me. I am glad to have read it, though.

Provenance, Ann Leckie. This was a reread that I enjoyed much more than I did my first time through, perhaps because I knew more of what I was expecting.

Empress of Forever, Max Gladstone. I am just getting started on this, and goodness there's a lot of action packed into it. I have not yet been hooked but I am enjoying myself to an entirely acceptable degree.

Writing. SUBMITTED MY THESIS.

Watching. Orphan Black S05E03! A rewatch for me -- A decided he wanted to keep going. I care about them all Very Much.

Eating. I have been consuming The Cake Of My People, courtesy of my mother; likewise stroganoff and fancy asparagus and a variety of cheeses. At home, I have inhaled most of a punnet of (British) strawberries (As A Treat).

Exploring. We spent a little time this afternoon leaning on a fence round the back of the offshoot of Sidney Sussex, in Cambridge, looking at sheep and eventually spotting a pheasant and listening to a green woodpecker that did not deign to show its face. On the way back, I realised that some of the giant hedges had been cut into Dubious Topiary, of a ?pig? and a Cartoon Unicorn, and was delighted.

Observing. My mother's collection of robins and blue tits and starlings, in particular! And also, of course, The Snails.

I have obtained most of the parts for making my own green glass hairpins and blue-green silk skirts.

U-shaped hairpins, with variously sized trays, some Czech glass cabochons, and the not fiendishly toxic jewelry glue. I sourced the hairpin components off Ali Express. It's mostly waiting on me trudging downstairs to Do Things at this point.

My original vision was hand-spun sea-green transparent glass with little bubbles in it, wound onto the ends of U-shaped pins, but I decided against attempting to commission those. The color I settled on was chrysoprase green, which has the advantage of looking like jade and therefore having a lot of choice in shapes. I got ... Many. (I also got faceted black, which are going to be Very Useful for my aesthetic presentation goal of looking like a Victorian/Regency galleon in deep mourning.)

The silk was Not Cheap, is taffeta, and looks blue and green at different angles and I'm afraid to touch it lest I screw it up. There might even be enough to wear as a sari.

I liked Provenance a lot and I was always disappointed other people were less enthusiastic about it at the time! Which means it is nice seeing people reread it and get more out of it. Hurrah, I'm not alone. XD

I feel ya. The first time around I spent so much time waiting for the space opera to happen that I couldn't enjoy the caper - or the feelings!
