vital functions
Mar. 28th, 2021 10:18 pmReading. Ruin of Angels, Max Gladstone. Still love this one a lot! Especially the grad student and the autistic knight! I'm chewing over, still, how much on this reread I'm noticing the thin gloss over our world, in a way that I find actively mildly disappointing after, well, Three Parts Dead; I'm definitely Pondering what I think could be different in ways that would allow the same points to be made without quite so much "ah, yes, and this is [geography] in a funny hat". No conclusions yet.
Also reread a bunch of M's ybeb snippets, for reasons (of explaining my assertion that I'd just had to read about child psychology in fanfiction on the AO3 myself).
And! The first two chapters of Paladin's Strength, before I decided that vaguely recognising the names but not remembering who any of the characters were was annoying me enough that I was gonna reread Paladin's Grace, because that I definitely would enjoy and is about the level of brain I have -- which is working out pretty well for me, and I expect to be able to report back on Paladin's Strength next week. (GRUMPY AUTISTIC PERFUMER. ID.)
Writing. Several sketched-out sentences of ch6 (synthesis), and also chapter 4 rewrites shuffled off to supervisors. Fingers crossed for actually getting a complete first draft of the thesis (i.e. actually filling out a draft of ch6) before the end of the month...
Watching. CXG S02E12. Oh this was such a BEAUTIFULLY engineered episode. I know I say that about all of them, but -- the amazing intro-to-theme-song lead-in! "I only invited him to feel bad about myself"!
Fairly early on in the episode I typed, frantically, "... oh god/Valencia/do not donate/your wedding plans/to Rebecca". Which. VINDICATION.
Other particular highlights: the amazing mirroring of Nathaniel and Rebecca's naps; Patrick's fantastic facial expressions; the look on Josh's face when he walks in on a flat that looks... a lot... like the time Valencia was being Josh's sister's bridesmaid...; the AMAZING song with Patrick and Rebecca and the piano; and Nathaniel's absolutely mile-high neon-lit kinks.
Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows (2005), with cousins, about which I'm afraid most of what I have to say is I HAVE NOW. CONSUMED. THE BIONICLE MEDIA. THERE IS NO MOREthe existence of which I am prepared to admit.
Listening. TMA 200. I... am still sorting out how I am feeling about this. I think I need to give it another listen. It will get its own post at some point, probably.
Playing. Among Us! Including some BEAUTIFUL detective work, if I do say so myself (had seen person A in location X while I was doing a job; then returned from job to find location X mysteriously empty of person A, who had not passed me; but DID pass person B, namely Adam, and therefore on my way to my next job via the cafeteria -- on the Skeld -- stopped off to call an emergency meeting in which I was INTENDING to say "so hey, Adam, did you see person A come past opposite you right before we passed each other?" only to discover that he was DEAD; therefore wound up accusing person A of IMPOSTING; was absolutely correct; enormously satisfying vindication), and also one occasion on which I was imposting and could probably have won if I hadn't been so keen to stab A myself.
Myst IV, slow ongoing progress. We are reaching the point where we've explored all the initial bits of Serenia and we're about to have to solve some puzzles...
Cooking. New for us this week: a smitten kitchen recipe for parmesan dutch baby with creamed mushrooms, which we served with green salad, and which was excellent and is going into the rotation.
Exploring. We had another COVID-19 test today (still part of the ZOE study, still nothing to worry about) but our usual test centre wasn't showing up in the booking sooo we went out on an adventure to the Zoological Society of Hertfordshire's... car park. At some point in the future, however, we will head back over to visit their wildlife park, which is apparently complete with DINOSAURS.
Growing. Allotment trip! During which I achieved a bunch of weeding various, got shallots into the ground, tidied up the greenhouse, and sulked about none of the beans being up yet. I also discovered that I have grown some spring onions (sowed them last year; mildly baffled they've come up now but here's hoping!) and... discovered something that might be horseradish (about which I know) or might be jerusalem artichoke (the existence of which upon my plot was rumoured but I'd really have expected to see it ever having flowers by now???).
At home: chillis out of the Warm Box, lolly sticks arrived and initially labelled, potting up needs to start Happening. Also on the todo list for this week: potting up the tomatoes, and getting some parsley started. And some peppers good grief, given that there's now space in the propagator.
Basils continue happy; overwintered chillis and pepper are surprisingly happy even if I do have to keep Dealing With aphids; overall things are turning green (even the cherry buds are starting to have visible non-brown colour!), and I'm feeling decidedly cheerful and enthusiastic about it all.
