Jan. 10th, 2021 09:31 pmReading. 20020: The Future of College Football, the sequel to 17666. We have been curling up on the sofa and working through it together; we have saved the last two chapters As A Treat to be finished... at some point this week. It is great. (And I just reread the first chapter of 17776 and maybe I will not fall down a hole and read the rest of it right now.)
Writing. :|
... I've reworked the first half of chapter 4 and need to keep going on the discussion section. I got sidetracked into plotting a graphof I'm Right, Dammit, and now I am. going. to Finish the Figure Captions for chapter 4 (I am).
Watching. Two episodes of CXG, since I last managed to remember to update! S02E05 "Why Is Josh's Ex-Girlfriend Eating Carbs?" and S02E06 "Who Needs Josh When You Have a Girl Group?"
- Rebecca is terrible at consent good grief
- the AMAZING thing of WiJo and Darryl miscommunicating horribly through both attempting to Respect The Other's Boundaries (WiJo doesn't wanna go to the event in very large part because Darryl, Darryl wants to go to even to support WiJo, Darryl doesn't wanna get ~serious~ with WiJo because dude was all "NOPE CAN WE JUST DATE LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE" at their first date and hadn't rescinded it, WiJo didn't want to ask to get introduced to Darryl's daughter because that would be Pushy and Inappropriate, ...)
- beautiful beautiful throughline of WiJo foodshaming Rebecca and Darryl slutshaming WiJo
- mirroring of Rebecca and Darryl (and Darryl and Maya) is great
-- I really like Maya
-- wow but this was emphasising to us that Darryl: Still Terrible
- mirroring of Rebecca and Trent is GENIUS (the beautiful intro leading into the theme song! the spending $10k in a desperate attempt to get the boys' attention! the deeply weirding all of them out!)
- MIRRORING. of REBECCA. and JOSH.
- that conversation with Paula, in which they are both wrong, my goodness.
- also loved the extent to which both Trent and Valencia are horribly unsure how social interaction works and are heavy-duty following the cues of the people around them
- I think that was the first episode in which Rebecca doesn't mention Josh, at all, even once
-- which is REALLY INTERESTING given that we had the Return of Trent moving into Rebecca-role (including all the overblown ~romantic~ fantasies and the Following of Tropes and--) combined with, well, Rebecca moving into Josh-role
-Valencia I am so glad you have Heather around to give you lessons in how to homosocial bonding so that you're not entirely relying on Rebecca good grief
Listening. The Magnus Archives season 5 arc 3 trailer. To which I have to say: AAAAAH. :D
Playing. A whole pile more Hanabi, including A & I making it to our very first score of 25 (...okay we had to undo One turn where A did a silly), and also a game where, in the very last play, I ended up going --OKAY PLEASE THINK ABOUT COLOURS OTHER THAN RED, because the last card A had picked up was the (playable) yellow 5 and he had everything he needed to be able to work this out and play it already, so that was nice. :D
Also: a bit more Obduction, which alas mostly proved that putting it on the Big TV Far Away is insufficient to deal with the motion-sickness it causes for me (there is Something about the way the camera pans).
Many many dragons; some PoGo.
And the horn! Every day this year! So far. :-p
Cooking. Tonight: roast butternut squash with leek-and-apricot-and-walnut-and-sage (sourdough) stuffing, which I was mildly disappointed by but A thinks is Good (and the second half of the squash might improve with further cooking, who knows). Also leek and potato soup, for lunches this week. SpƤtzle for A's birthday (with mushroom stroganoff to go with). More squash and cauliflower and chickpea curry, to use up the last half-Tromboncino from the allotment; there's still two Pattison Blanc to go, one of which I have primarily saved for seeds, and then we'll be done with last year's squash harvest. (The squash will probably get fried up with onion and put in quesadilla.)
Oh! And a (frozen) blackberry and (tinned) pear pie, and I need to use up the rest of the pastry. At some point. Soon.
Growing. The lemon is both not happy and not dead: it's lost most of its leaves from one branch, but several of the others are looking Okay still. I coaxed myself into spending some quality time with it this evening and did some Mechanical Care; I think I put "a little bit of lemon" back on the todo list until I've gone round the whole thing (at least) once. And then maybe I will get my act together to start misting it and see if slightly increased local humidity improves its general attitude.
Per yesterday's post, I have ordered a lot of seeds. I think I give myself until the beginning of February and then have a proper go at starting things off.
Observing. Patio fox! Birds (and also squirrels) queueing up for the feeder. Several excellent sunsets. (A's... somewhat dazed... face when he indirectly asked me how the thesis was going and instead of normal grumbling about words I made him look at multiple figures and explained what they were showing and what processes I thought were responsible. For, er, probably somewhere over half an hour.)
