Dear heavens. I have just discovered (from Wikipedia, so take that fwiw) that "Matron" is a unisex title in the British Army, and apparently those holding it are usually "of the rank of Major or above." Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Nationwide: if you had a senior member of the Army Nursing Corps who also happened to be the son of a Duke or Marquis they'd be Major Matron Lord....
