kaberett: a watercolour painting of an oak leaf floating on calm water (leaf-on-water)

  1. I made it to the gym, by myself, and didn't run away again when people needed to move cars such that I could actually use the step-free route (admittedly that was because staff spotted me and cheerfully told me they'd get on that before I had the chance to). WITNESS MY BRAVERY.
  2. I was much delayed in getting out to the gym by... A Cat. There was, you see, A Sad Yelling from the communal hallway. I eventually peeled myself off the sofa and opened the door, only to be faced with next-door's Round Grey Foldy-Eared Cat, who Very Definitely Wanted To Come In. "..." I said. "You... are not, to the best of my knowledge, an outdoor cat," I said unto it. "... your people are super not responding to having their door knocked upon," I said. I picked it up and took it out round back and attempted to post it back through next door's open kitchen window, but it was having none of it. I wandered a little further around, held it up to see its companion-cat in one of the other windows, and went WAIT WHOOPS NO BAD IDEA at the point at which they the both of them Did A Threat Display. I took it even further around, but it seemed to have no desire to go in through the cracked-open patio door, and see above re not being convinced it was an outdoor cat (and we very much do live on a busy road in London), so back indoors we went. Whereupon it proceeded to run away from me inside the house... repeatedly... until such point as I opened up the bathroom for it and put a bowl of water down... at which stage it decided that actually it wanted to sprawl full length on the living room floor, wash itself a bit, and then start Very Assertively demanding Extensive Head Scritches, while vocalising all the while. It a very loud cat. So here am I, petting this cat, which is very gently bracing a forepaw against my wrist with no claws at all, and wiggling its back legs around in the YES MORE SENSATION way that cats do, going ...........but I was going to go? to the gym??? and next door still aren't responding????? so I... very tentatively went, okay, I tried taking you out round the back before, you were very confused by this, what happens... if I open the front door. WHEREUPON cat took itself round to the patio from the OTHER direction, very deliberately, and I stared at its cracked-open door a little, and I stared at it some more, and eventually I decided it was a grown animal and Would Probably Be Fine, so while I still have some questions about how on earth it got into the communal hallway in the first place... there we go, cat. Met A Cat.
  3. And to my utter astonishment, I haven't actually had a massive allergic reaction everywhere, so: hurrah for better living through chemistry.
  4. Post-gym, I wandered around the various shops a little, in the process winning a kilo of strawberries for £2.90. (I was very good and did not in fact buy multiple kilos of strawberries.)
  5. Jumping earlier in time through the day again: a few days ago I moved the jostaberry "sorbet" (that was actually more like granita) from last year's attempt to the fridge from the freezer, and the ice cream maker bowl into the freezer, and so this morning I rechurned the sorbet mix and lo, it is smooth and tasty and Good and now we will Eat It slightly faster, probably. (Also it's taking up much less freezer room, via the magic of having been moved into a much smaller container. Smaller crystals = more efficient packing = smaller volume, hurrah.)
  6. Some time ago now, I made a toasted seed mix to serve with houmous; this evening I finished it off, as part of dinner, and lo, it was good.
  7. I keep being sad that I fundamentally don't like any of Maggie Stiefvater's other stuff half as much as I love The Scorpio Races, give or take a soft spot for the teenage werewolves, but it's now been long enough since all of the Raven Boys books thus far were released that they were available for instant borrowing in electronic format from my library, from the comfort of aforementioned sofa, so I've spent the past couple of days inhaling those for the first time as A Break from the various bits of difficult life admin I've been doing.
  8. In respect of which: I am not where I wanted to be with the PhD work but I'm managing to talk myself down from Actual Terror about that; I have a reasonable plan of action, I'm going to do it, It Will Actually Be Fine.
  9. A has now seen The Bat also. As I type this it is approximately bat o'clock, so I am Hopeful that if I keep half an eye out the window while I'm wrangling the dishwasher I will be lucky.
  10. Concert on Saturday. I am feeling reasonably buoyant about it; I'm at the stage where I'm mostly managing to play the notes, and I'm hopeful that if I manage to keep the practice up over the summer I'll be able to focus a bit harder on musicality next term.
