I don't know if you might prefer the Fever Crumb prequels to the main Mortal Engines books or if they would also annoy you. I certainly find the Fever Crumb more sympathetic than Hester Shaw but i also had more patience for the Tom and Hester books. so they may still not do it for you... (The final two books of the main quartet are more focused on the next generation but Tom and Hester are still major characters) The Fever Crumb books are written for slightly younger subset of Young Adult and have good Bi representation.
