[art] Wildlife Photographer of the Year

kaberettAbout a fortnight ago now, I went to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the Natural History Museum with swaldman (we are making a habit of this!). I was certainly of the opinion (and I think Simon agreed?) that this year's finalists appeared to have been selected more on technical difficulty than on anything that we could emotionally connect to in the pictures; this was cemented rather for me by the fact that I have more favourites from the 25 People's Choice Award finalists than from the rest of the exhibition (certainly proportionally and possible absolutely). Voting is open until the 16th of January -- maybe go play if you feel that way inclined?
The particular ones I'm having difficulty choosing between are Caterpillar curl, Jelly starburst and Tasty delicacy (which last hits all my buttons around Victorian botanical and zoological illustration).
From the main exhibition, my particular favourites were: Heart's delight (Cotswold pennycress), Tentacle tornado (Cape box jellyfish), Flamingo veil (more impressive at larger sizes; flamingoes), Red-hot breakout (lava friend), Heart's desire (blurry atmospheric birds), Light fandango (mayflies, abstract), Fairy-tale forest (black-and-white mushrooms), Tiger pearls (tiger moth), The Moon and the crow, Grub time (oriole and chicks), Sand-napping (baby Galapagos sea lion).
Added to this list on going back over the galleries to find links, having not impressed me enough in person to note at the time, were: Night blow (orca), Eviction attempt (parakeet and Bengal monitor lizard), Into the blue (seascape with seagull), The dying of the light (barrel jellyfish; I actually like this one much less than the one that went into the PCA listing above, but as I say this one involves more obvious technical etc...), Wind composition (catkins), Little star (bishop's cap cactus and agave), Grass at sunrise (Peraballia minuta), Arctic Showtime (humpback whale, but interesting for the engineering), Crystal precision (BAT and broken glass).
Honourable mention to Alpine retreat, Alpine choughs clinging to the roof of a snow-dusted church in Sudtirol with a sundial just in frame, for being the perfect intersection of my interests and my mother's.
