kaberett: a patch of sunlight on the carpet, shaped like a slightly wonky heart (light hearted)
[personal profile] kaberett
Sorry that this is going up so late, [personal profile] cosmolinguist <3 I think probably it is going to be ten-good-things format, because that is easy on my brain and because I have a lot to be pleased about at the moment.
  1. I have rectified some sins of the past by dint of overtipping massively at the restaurant I ate at tonight - it's tiny with a tiny number of staff and I've been terrible at having enough change on me to give decent tips, so it Pleased Me to arrange for us as a party to tip, um, 30% (most of the egregious was me, I think?). Also: I took a person to a food that they had not eaten before, and they liked it!
  2. P-the-no-longer-unethical's parents really really like me. I mean, I think it helped that I ingratiated myself from the get-go by presenting his mother with some of her favourite chocolates (which I knew were her favourite because of a shopping trip with P-the-then-unethical several years ago...), but fundamentally on Sunday morning as I was getting my act together to leave she twice made very firm comments about things we could do Next Time I Visit. And apparently P's father made "correct me if I'm wrong, by all means, but it's a pity you're not dating that human" noises about me after I'd left. And -- two lovely days of sunshine and walks along the river and music and cryptic crosswords and wordplay, and I solved a couple of Araucaria clues with a lot of scaffolding (sorry, folk, this is probably only meaningful if you've ever paid any attention to the UK cryptic crosswords scene), and I played a new-to-me game and didn't lose my shit over so doing and am really very proud of myself.
  3. Yesterday I watched Elementary and Korra with [personal profile] sebastienne and my useless ex and my housemate and her houseguests, and I had a lot of FEELINGS about them, and S did a pretty good job of convincing me I was gonna have more feelings about the Korra once I know how much to be on the defensive with it. Just -- ugh, the extent to which Sherlock is just continuously terrified of absolutely everything.
  4. Facesfrienddd. Lovely lovely evening yesterday (yes, it was, stop pulling that face); I got to do my magic trick of walking into someone's kitchen, rummaging through the fridge, and generating a meal for them; I got cuddles and conversation and (to my intense embarrassment, what are my life choices, etc) making out to a soundtrack of The Mechanisms; and I got to be wry and Machiavellian at one step removed. (If you are not aware that "phrasing DTMFA very politely and tactfully" is a service I provide to friends on request, yo, this is a skillset I have.)
  5. I got to say goodbye to my housemate before vanishing for a fortnight - she came home from work early specially <3 I just - periodically remember how astonishingly lucky I am to have started living with this more-or-less stranger, friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend, and to have it work out this well; it's just -- it is a gift.
  6. I have brought my breadpet with me! I decanted it into a tupperware and fed it and put its normal jar on to soak, and now it is sat in my parental kitchen downstairs (I am going to introduce it to Cambs and Cornish yeast). J'ai l'intention de making my mother sourdough using it at some point. (In similarly consumerist news I acquired a cheeseboard for my mum before I left London today; it includes a cheese with FERNS ON because she likes ferns. I FOUND A CHEESE WITH FERNS ON.) I continue to sadly explain to people that I spontaneously generated an internally-consistent theology in which it is a minor deity.
  7. I defeated a doctor! It was a new GP and I have a minor but unpleasant Issue that has been a problem for a few weeks; despite all the attendant anxiety I have been prescribed a course of antibiotics and told what other care to apply and instructed to come back if this lot still hasn't cleared it up, hurrah.
  8. I am having an embarrassing amount of fun reblogging pictures of blue minerals on tumblr at the moment. ([tumblr.com profile] kaberett, surprisingly enough, should you be curious.)
  9. My mother had my bed made up already with the dinosaur bed linen. :-) (I have lots and lots of dinosaur bed linen, all sadly for single beds; I can't find double-size duvet covers in cotton with dinosaurs on.)
  10. The (northern-hemisphere) days are getting longer. Happy Solstic, to those as celebrate it. :-)

I've been out of the loop for a little while, so it is super awesome to come back and find that all these wonderful things are going on for you. My response to your tumblr was basically "Ooo... shiny!"

My brain does not do cryptic crossword clues. It just doesn't work that way. Frequently somebody can tell me the answer and I still won't understand the clue. This is a source of sadness for my supervisor, who writes a charity crossword every Christmas. Rumor had it that he may also be the compiler of the weekly ones in the local paper...

I too am "uh, what?" about cryptic crossword clues.

DTMFA => Dump The MotherFucker Already

I think it was a thing on [that blog by that bloke whose name I've forgotten] and it comes up on Captain Awkward now and again.

P, and P's parents, sound like good people to have around.

If you ever become aware of any motherfuckers which I ought to dump already, please do me the favor of mentioning it.

Also, let me recommend to you my mother's tactic from the late 80s/mid-90s for custom Large Expanse of Decorated Fabric things:

Get plain fabric of some sort. (In this case, a nice cotton double-size duvet cover.) Get a small and reasonable amount of cotton with the desired element (either a somewhat worn smaller dinosaur bed linen, or regular sewing print cotton with dinosaurs on). Get some iron-on fabric adhesive medium. Get some coordinating puffy paint. Sewing gear of some type would also be good.

Cut out dinosaurs from the printed fabric with a bit of a margin around them, and using the iron-on, iron them on to the plain duvet, strategically spaced to provide the sort of scatter or pattern you'd like. Tack the edges down sufficient to keep them not falling off if the iron-on adhesive goes, but not necessarily neatly. Finish the tacked-on edges with puffy paint (which will hide many tack-on sins).

Launder gently in the future, as the puffy paint will eventually go. Thus the tacking. The puffy paint can be replenished as needed, and should dry at least 24 hours before use.

Hmmm. I think I have a massive amount of cotton fabric with dinosaurs on. If I do, would you like a double duvet sized cover? It may be slightly clumsily made, as I am fairly new to using a sewing machine, but it would be made with love and dinosaur appreciation!

I will find out if I have enough fabric already and then let you know. If I don't, I can always get hold of fabric and do it for you anyway, if you like! (Or you can get hold of fabric and send it to me, or whatever.)

On which note, what kind of fastenings do you like on duvet covers? I dislike buttons and prefer the snap shut types (and I think I have snap fastenings already), but Dad finds the snap shut ones too fiddly and complained when I sewed some on in place of buttons, so... let me know?

Okay! I have been looking and my fabric is pre-cut-up for... something, into small enough pieces I don't want the headache of joining them. Could you go to ebay, put in "dinosaur fabric" in the fabric section, and let me know the types of designs that appeal? They've got fossil ones, skeleton ones, cartoon ones, realistic ones, pretty much the works. Then I'll have an idea of what to look for in fabric! (I'm fine with buying it and you reimbursing me later if you want to; I have money at the moment and me buying it means less fuss about how much to get and delivery, etc.)

We have purchased that! (My mother is helping me figure it all out.) Because of the amount available, we're gonna have to do it with a border top and bottom (maybe the sides as well, we've only guesstimated so far); that would be the same colour as the back of the duvet. That could be white, or another colour that matches the dinosaurs/volcanoes. Any preferences, or whatever we can scrounge up?

White turns out to be the easiest to source, so that is what it shall be. It is turning out a bit more expensive than I'd hoped, so much so that I am a little loath to confess to how much the fabric alone cost, ahaha.

I may crochet you a little dinosaur to go with it; I found some cute patterns a while ago and haven't yet had the excuse... Any preferences for types of dinosaur?!

Well really...

A++ for good taste. I'll see what I can do, although Adventures Through My Yarn Stash might result in a very interestingly coloured dinosaur... (Fibre-wise, cotton or silk would be safest bearing in mind allergies and such, right?)

Re: the duvet cover! We need to know which is the width and which is the length, size-wise, apparently.

Or we could google!

We have exactly the right amount of fabric, absolutely zero left over. I will cry if it doesn't come out right, ahahaha.
