(Blah still getting the hang of this camera blah doing things in a hurry blah. More seriously, apologies for being a bit of a crap friend at the moment -- work will hopefully be swamping me a little less for a couple of days early next week.)

DINNER TODAY. It is French toast drowned in maple syrup with black pepper; some Saint Agur cheese kindly provided by one of my party guests last week; a pear; and some walnut pieces. OM NOM NOM, and it took me about 15 minutes to put together.

I had a (necessarily small) birthday party on, well, my birthday last week (the Friday; apologies to everyone I couldn't invite, which is most of you). This is the beginnings of dinner, featuring our dining-room tiny sun, my housemate's table, "what food restrictions this dish is compatible with" tiles by Ozone Louise (who is entirely welcome to identify herself in comments...), and the tile I nicked out of a pile of rubbish near Paddington a few weeks ago and have been employing as an Unterlag ever since.

The food featured is, left to right:
  • Grunensalat (finely diced red onion, cider vinegar, olive oil, pinch of salt, pinch of sugar, Leaves Various, sliced cucumber)
  • potato salad (boiled sliced Charlottes, chopped spring onion, chopped hard-boiled egg, cider vinegar)
  • at the back, The Cake Of My Family (see below)
  • at the front, a small bowl containing yoghurt + cucumber + mint
  • quiche #1: rosemary-thyme wholemeal crust, a thin layer of membrillo paste, caramelised onions, goats' cheese, custard made up with creme fraiche
  • quiches #2&3: rosemary-thyme wholemeal crust, caramelised onions, lots of extra-mature Cheddar, custard made up with creme fraiche

Another view of the table, now with extra Tomatensalat, daal, rice, and Parisian strawberries courtesy of P.

A close-up of my first attempt at the Family Cake, sat on a plate given me by [personal profile] evilsusan: it is essentially chocolate and hazelnuts, topped with raspberry jam and melted chocolate. The leavening is a bit tricksy - it's a small mountain of baking powder plus seven beaten egg whites, and I'm always convinced I can't fold egg whites in competently - but this seems to have worked and was demolished by the assembled, to my gratification. Successfully baking this was a Rite of Passage - I feel even more like a proper grown-up member of my clan now. :-)
