Not long ago I showed the poster with the "Wicked Girls" lyrics to my friend wildpear, who has a five-year-old daughter, and she in turn showed it to her daughter, and the two of them spent something like an hour and a half going over the lyrics and picking apart the meanings and the truths until the kidling was sure she understood. (I don't know many details about what they said, but I'm told there was an in-depth discussion about the difference between "wicked" and "evil".)
Some days I'm so, so scared for all of my friends' kids, because I'm seeing them grow up and I know so much about how hurtful and devastating the world can be (and I know enough to know there are things I haven't even imagined that could befall them), and it's things like that that give me some comfort, that this little girl I love so much is asking those sorts of questions and learning those sorts of things.
