How to do science.

Oh, sure, I learned a lot of facts in the various departments associated with my degree - but questioning and reasoning and reexamining the evidence and testing hypotheses and weighing up potential origins and competing explanations, in order to build a holistic model of a complex system?

That I learned from the University Counselling Service.

One of the other things we talked about in today's (wrap-up, goodbye) session was intuition: how I've excellent intuition when it comes to organic chemistry, but I'm still working on developing it when applied to geology and my own head. Plus some stuff about how I'd probably have done much better if I'd stayed in chemistry, but I'd not have been anything like as challenged, and I'd probably not have found it as satisfying.

Oh, hey, another refugee from an undergrad chem major. Hi there! (Did you ever take inorganic? Sounds relevant to your new field.)

Wherever you learned it, science-as-process is Win. :)

Hee, less refugee and more "I always knew I might end up in geology" (well, from the summer before starting my degree, anyway...) - Cambridge's Natural Sciences tripos is a bit weird like that.

I did do some inorganic, but it just Didn't Fit With My Brain in the way that organic does. (Electron-pushing? Fine. Organic practicals? Fine. Inorganic practicals? NEVER GOT THE RIGHT THING OUT.)
