Nov. 3rd, 2024 11:03 pmReading. Still slogging very slowly through I Contain Multitudes, including getting distracted every few pages by looking things up. From today's couple of paragraphs:
... the most wonderful example of this convergence comes from a study of American roller derby players. The players share skin bacteria with their teammates, and different teams have their own distinctive communities. But during a match, as the two teams clash and jostle on the track, their skin microbes temporarily converge. Contact breeds conformity. Sometimes, the long waltz involves hip-checks.
Writing. Technically, about two words on the pain book.
Half a (small) page of scribbles getting various bits of maybe-poem out of my head and onto paper. I have given myself a dedicated notebook, and slightly to my surprise appear to be approaching this one in a somewhat unusual fashion for me -- I feel as though/think that historically I have gone "here is a Big Strong Feeling that is condensing into words in one great rush, like crashing out of solution", but this time I'm definitely scribbling down disparate scraps and incidents and trying to work out how to assemble them -- I'm not managing to express this particularly coherently, hmm, but something something deliberate construction to frame A Narrative as distinct from Organically Telling A Story. Not at all The Actual Feeling, but... something like it.
A bit more handwriting...
Listening. A few more episodes of The Hidden Almanac! Manual advance is a Tedium. We need to sort ourselves out with a way to make it Go By Itself, good grief.
Playing. A round of Scrabble with A, which was mildly torturous. I am pretty sure it was not helped by my being Distinctly Low On Brain...
Cooking. Butternut squash and sage macaroni cheese: yes.
Roasted pumpkin with chestnut, cinnamon and bay leaves: would probably be better with a more interesting (and less melon-y) pumpkin than we used.
Seelkuchen/Faschingkrapfen.
Exploring. Tiiiny bit of Exeter centre-ville.
Growing. The Tiny Greenhouse Pumpkin was, last seen, becoming Slightly Less Tiny. I have moved the fig tree indoors in frustration over whoever it is that is Indelicately Nibbling the saffron coming up around the base of the pot, then deciding it isn't tasty and discarding the leaves, at least until such time as I can induce myself to Apply Chickenwire...
