Jul. 21st, 2024 11:23 pmReading. An Immense World, Ed Yong. As you can probably tell from how much I talked about this, I adored it. I took around twenty pages of notes? Cannot recommend highly enough. Fascinating contents, beautifully and entertainingly written, and I only had about three indignant "that's not what words MEAN" moments (but could work out both what he did mean and why he thought what he'd said had that meaning).
Pain Is Really Strange, Steve Haines. Short picture book; lots of references. I am doing a lot of thinking about chronic pain at the moment for reasons (mostly "I am trying to work my way up to writing the essays I've been threatening for the past 18 months or so") so scrolled through the library's matches for "pain"; this looked most promising; I think it itself was useful for my purposes but I was mildly alarmed when I went and looked up the author...
Spoon-Fed, Tim Spector. Did Not Finish.
Hither, Page, Cat Sebastian. I woke up early this morning and was idly scrolling through the library catalogue and came across this. I'm having a bit of a "that's not how language" and a bit of a "that's not how police investigations???" and a bit of an "oh DEAR continUity" (though I think there's only actually been one slip I've spotted), but I have also spent most of today reading it, on a day when my brain has mostly been trying to eat itself, and am Contemplating the prospect of the sequel.
Stationery blogs continue. So do misc medical research.
Writing. Mentally drafting some chunks of essay on chronic pain; actually making some notes on same. Haven't actually transcribed any of the mental drafts yet, though.
Cooking. Dragged myself through making amaretti go this evening. Moussaka at the beginning of the week still somehow less good than my mother's, so I'm going to have to ask her to make it again while I watch.
Eating. Artichokes. Gooseberries. Jostaberries. Small handful of redcurrants. Raspberries. Blueberries nearly ready.
Exploring. Established the location of more of the nominally available-for-public-use bike pumps in town (one actually public and broken; one presumably working but behind a swipe card lock); in the process found a water bottle refill station that I must have been past any number of times before but had totally failed to notice on any previous occasion, so that's useful.
Growing. Persimmon dead (probably of too much water), about which I am somewhat sad. Soft fruit all doing very well. Squash keep germinating and then disappearing.
Observing. Teenage moorhens at the civic centre! Mulberries starting to turn red, also at the civic centre. Many many amorous shieldbugs. The Bat.

Date: 2024-07-21 11:12 pm (UTC)I followed the link because I was wondering whether it was something like that, or more about the author's behavior or political views. Not that "cranialsacral therapy" isn't also a problem in this context.
