Closer to fine is the PhD song because:

got my paper and I was free

That was on repeat through the hell week before the final deadline, sometimes it came down to: I will write for the duration of Closer to fine. And then I will play it again and write one more paragraph or format one more reference. Sonnnnnnnng.

All these years I've heard the lyric you quote as the less I seek my source for some divinity but definitive probably makes more sense...
