fascinating local driving culture

we have now twice in the past few days had someone come to an unnecessary but emphatic stop and gesture enthusiastically for us to cross in front of them... when they could very easily have been past and away before we were ready to start crossing... and then floor it and disappear off into the distance at, like, at least twice the speed limit. we are BAFFLED.

Do you think it's a "oh no, wheelchair-user, must show gallantry" situation?

I'm on foot at the moment and I'm not sure it was light enough for the stick to be obvious!

I've had plenty of bizarre behaviour from drivers wrt the chair, gallantry isn't the word that springs to mind. Fear? Incomprehension?

I wonder if it's people trying to do 'three acts of kindness' or some such?

Is it people enthuasiastically over-interpreting the changes to the Highway Code?
"...when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way" ?
