You know, I was going to have a whole rant about how Duolingo is bad and should feel bad[1], but ADAM JUST CAME TO TELL ME THAT MEDLARS HAVE BEEN LISTED ON FREEGLE. Medlars!!! for me!!! TO MAKE JAM. He emerged from the bathroom where he was in theory doing bath things to Show Me Something. "Is it a Good Aminal?" I enquired. "BETTER THAN THAT," said the Adam, bafflingly, for surely no such thing exists-- but: MEDLAR.

[1] okay, maybe I'll have the rant as well: I was very annoyed when three-hearts-then-you're-out got taken away from Legendary for subscribers (and also when "exercises you missed get repeated at the end" got taken away). I was delighted yesterday-I-think to find I could turn Infinite Hearts back off! I was the opposite of delighted to discover that -- right, okay, when you ~run out of hearts~ your options are "pay gems" (whatever, I've got loads of them, but I don't actually want to buy my way out of actually learning shit) or "quit the lesson". "Quit the lesson" I would be fine with -- this is how it used to work! -- apart from the fact that YOU THEN NEED TO REACQUIRE HEARTS, which you can do via... "pay gems", "wait", or "do a designated practice". Which! I would be fine with! if the designated practices! were actually USEFUL TO ME, but drilling the absolute most basic vocabulary in the entire language tree instead of being able to continue working on vocab I am still integrating is infuriating. Like!!! at least drill me on abstract nouns or something??? making me drill "salut, bonsoir" or whatever is just! bad! pedagogy!!! and I am VERY CROSS, and have turned Infinite Hearts back on even though it is actively worse for my learnings. >:(

re Infinite Hearts I SO HEAR YOU. I am very annoyed about taking away prompts I missed at the end.

Also I have learned not to click the automatic "do a lesson" prompt, but rather to go into the app and choose a lesson by hand, because: Japanese has its own writing system(s). If I select the automatic prompt, I get a lesson with the options subtitled IN ROMAN LETTERS. SO RUDE.

Medlars! I have long wanted to give them a try but never had the opportunity. Though I haven't checked local Freegle. (otoh I think there is greater historical precedent of medlars being grown in your area of the world than in mine)

this is probably in part because I watch too many retrocomputing videos but I wish one could just select A Release of Duolingo and stay with it and not be subject to A/B testing the way they do it or surprise bad changes :(

I'm so with you on the infinite heart thing. The mistake repetition at the end is so useful.
