[growth] first frost

... was yesterday, and as a result most of my squash plants are now looking Very Sad. Which means! that I have now transplanted the Pattison Blanc and the (very small) ridiculous round courgette into the greenhouse: they're probably not going to survive the move but they were Really Not Happy anyway, and if they do then this suits me fine and if they don't then oh well the compost bin is right there...
... and this meant that I could finish digging up what I sincerely hope is The Last Of The Carpet (Part II), which was partly under the summer squash mound. IT IS FREE and in a pile on top of the earth it used to be under, and next time we take the car to the allotment I will fill some rubble sacks with it and then we can Dispose Of The Damn Stuff and hopefully this time we've actually got it all up.
Also yesterday: another saffron flower! Which looked like somebody had chomped the top off of it, so I wasn't sure if it was working its way toward opening up or had already had its One Day; given the state of it today I am Assuming that the answer is The Latter. So no more saffron-the-spice for me from that one, but lots of motivation to actually make it to the plot every day to check how they're getting on -- most of them have not flowered yet, I'm very confident, so Fingers Crossed I'll manage to get enough to cook something using Local Hand-Foraged Saffron. Top contenders are the broad bean kuku (though probably not until broad bean season next year), Swedish saffron buns, and Cornish saffron buns...
