vital functions
Sep. 17th, 2023 11:31 pmReading. At the Feet of the Sun, Victoria Goddard. Finished! I did not feel that that hung together anything like as well as the first one did, alas, but it really did get much much better after the first third. The construction was so nearly excellent and then it just... didn't, quite.
And also! I finally got my act together to compile all of the Seanan McGuire October Daye Patreon shorts, and all of the novels from the Humble Bundle I went in on at the beginning of the month, into One Giant Ebook courtesy of several Calibre plugins and the series list and reading order page on a fan wiki. I am currently partway through The Act of Hares, i.e. short story #8 of... 35... before I actually hit the first novel of the series. Most of these are completely new to me because I have just Not Been Coping with short fiction, but it is mildly intimidating to have my ereader cheerfully inform me that I am a whole entire 3% of the way through the ginormous anthology...
(I am having all my usual desires to get out a pen and scribble corrections and suggestions, but I'm nonetheless enjoying myself and mildly resentful that I keep needing to pull myself away from the Story to do, like, things.)
Watching. Good Omens S01E04, which I continue to love less than I want to. Possibly a reread is in my proximate future.
Cooking. I've now had a second go at Meera Sodha's recipe for vegan autumn pilau with squash, cavolo nero and smoked garlic, this time minus the smoked garlic and using an extremely pared-down garam masala. Increased proportion of vegetables to rice worked well and I think I got away with falling back on cumin + cinnamon + chilli but this is still definitely not our favourite. (I should attempt to get around to making the summer pilau next week while we still have tomatoes...)
Exploring. Gosh I have been all over the place this week, but highlights were revisiting the Cornwall Seal Sanctuary and also poking around some new-to-me bridlepaths I'd had on my radar, that took us out to the Predannack Airfield via lots of excellent heather and gorse flowers.
Growing. ALAS the late blight is setting in properly and it is time to dispose of most of the rest of my tomato plants, I think. I have fingers crossed for actually getting some Sugar Magnolia seed to sow next season, though needing to be away from the poor plants at Critical Points In Their Development is unfortunate. Pattison Blanc is possibly finally starting to think about setting fruit; I did have one ridiculous round courgette fruit but it got eaten by someone who wasn't me.
Observing. The Milky Way, some more! A Clouded Yellow butterfly (I think). Ivy mining bees. Lots and lots of snails (wild). THE SEA.

Date: 2023-09-18 08:13 pm (UTC)I am still Extremely Intimidated by my e-reader's estimate of how long it'll take me to get through but I gotta say having invested the executive function up-front so I don't have to keep finding different bitty short stories is really nice
