Because November is hard for lots of us, and in particular is something I find hard (my not-quite-month of mourning begins tomorrow, officially); because it's spring in the southern hemisphere and the days just keep getting shorter in the northern; because I talked to my counsellor yesterday about all of the shapes and forms that value takes.

recessional makes lists and writes about things like airport security and cats and dreams and fanfiction, and it's all mashed together into a life, and sometimes I read and go "yes, me too!" which is wonderful and sometimes I go "never thought of that" which is also wonderful.

oursin knows all the things and she does a good and excellant WHUT! especially when confronted with journalists who should know things but often do not. I've learnt about history and archives and Victorian attitudes towards sex from reading her journal. She also makes bread. Most delightful hedgehog.

toft writes about her work, and her adventures with origami, and books read, and television watched, and fruit picked, and all those little snippets which make up a life. It makes me happy to read, she's a fun person with a great sense of humour and she works at the happy.

kaberett writes about depression and mental-illness and sadness, and they do it fiercely, and with humour, and with insight. Life is a struggle, and they are out there battling the brain-weasels and being a strong and brave person, and sending us dispatches from the front-line. Much love.

I've learned a ton about books and media from reading your posts. I appreciate your friendliness and candor (which don't seem like they would always go together but you exhibit both in the best ways).

I love reading your fandom reactions and your book recs -- you often introduce me to writers and topics I wouldn't have thought of exploring. I also enjoy your nature pictures and tales of life in the lighthouse.

He's also a fantastic host. That might sound trivial; it isn't. It means he has a combination of kindness, politeness and emotional astuteness that lets him look after everyone around him.

Two reasons I love you that you may not have realized:

1) partly due to your relationship with your cat, and encouragement as I got to know the cat that adopted me, I have become a cat person. I even got adopted by a new cat this year, who is such a neat little guy and clearly loves me with his whole furry self. I think this is due, in no small part, to the role model you provided in respect and love for cats. Someday soon, I will post proper pictures (Cat does not mind, I checked)

2) I love your namesake, now that I know her. I love several extraordinary books, and many very very good authors; all due to your suggestions and recommendations over the years. I'm about to move again, have I told you that? I found out Wednesday. I'm hoping for a gentler work-life balance that will let me read again properly. For now, my husband reads voraciously for both of us, and he's discovered your recommendations too, sometimes rereading them appreciatively.

I owe you a great deal, truly. Much love, my friend.
