Rachel is a local-to-me friend; she talks about books & feminism & (co-)parenting, along with really stellar posts like Pregnancy and Consent.

She makes me welcome and she makes space for me and she makes me feel listened to, and then she says stuff and I am overwhelmed all over again by how much I have to learn from her, and how impressed I am by her political work. She understands about making space for people with oppressions that differ from hers, & she is kind & -- I am so grateful to know her, and she is *way* up the list of People I Want To Spend More Time With But Am Too Crap To Say This To Except Indirectly. There's a recommendation for you. ;)

I keep being baffled by how many amazing people are willing to put up with me. Grateful, don't get me wrong, but very baffled. I am trying to have faith that there's a reason for it, but most of the time I genuinely don't understand.

-- fyreharper is someone I met via a love meme hosted by jjhunter, where I was staggered to see her not only self-nominating but pride-threading that thing up. I have never dared to self-nominate for a love meme and I am generally capable of saying good things about myself only if (1) I am super pissed-off with someone else or (2) it is explicitly a space for saying good things about myself, so I am endlessly impressed by having the guts to take care of oneself that hard.

She is beautifully, wholeheartedly enthusiastic about science; she is lovely on the topic of poetry; and she is firmly creative, be it cooking (with which I can empathise) or sewing (by which I am endlessly intimidated) or any of a huge number of other things.

So glad to know you, even if you are quiet ♥

Wait, let's try that again: he is wry & funny & kind, & he knows all sorts of things about all sorts of things & is happy to share his knowledge; and he was very patient about not being spiky while I was being baffled by Buffy & Angel, and subsequently very kind when s7 of Buffy did a number on me. Seriously, anyone who can manage that after several months of me being at best rude about the Show Of Their Heart deserves some kind of accolade.

FURTHERMORE he is an excellent geek & an excellent cook & he came to my graduation & congratulated me, which he didn't have to, and he is Generally Lovely And A Good Sort. Plus he rock-climbs, which means I get a regular infusion of pictures of lovely rocks via him [plus, you know, some people, I guess?]. Delighted to know him, & you would be too. :-)

surpassingly wins the prize for most doggedly persistent belief that the world can be a good and beautiful thing, and for pursuing that apparently No Matter What.

This includes, of course, making the world into a good and beautiful thing, when all else fails. surpassingly is rebuilding their life from the ground up with grace and panache and people to catch them when they stumble, which one doesn't get for nothing; and they pour art & compassion & kindness into the world, and every time they teach me a little bit more about how to live and how to live well.

Ross is a pilot and a magician with sound tech and a conference organiser and a perpetrator of beautiful photography and a Person Who Can DIY & is constantly, constantly learning.

And encouraging me in same! Be it reminding me that people can take a deep breath and pick up qualifications in something they've always been interested in and use 'em, or encouraging me in my baby steps w/ photography in turn, this is One Cool Multi-Talented Person It Is Good To Have Around. :-)

This, right here, is someone who knows about family and rooting oneself and the weird experiences of immigration. She is an awesome scientist and an awesome fan and generally amazing; I am struck over and over again by her activism and her compassion and her willingness to share her life, and especially the small quiet moments of joy. I am much the richer, and much the happier, for reading nanila's DW.

It is not at all uncommon for them to say something that makes me feel as though my head has been opened up, given a good stir and a squirt of oil, and put back together working better.

Fights the world tooth and nail to get the things they want out of it, with a frankly awe-inspiring level of grit and determination and refusal to give up. Talks frankly about brains & their wrangling; about family & friends & community & self-care.
