vital functions

Reading. Fugitive Telemetry, Martha Wells. This (as with most of the Murderbot books) suffered from The Leverage Problem for me, i.e. if you're going to make a big point of how paranoid (or competent) your characters are, I shouldn't be able to spot this many things they're missing.

Spoilers under the nested cut! Or in the rest of this paragraph, if you're reading with cuts expanded. In the case of Fugitive Telemetry, I'd have much more sympathy for Murderbot having failed to register the possibility of bimbling around the outside of the station if, y'know, it hadn't, as of Chapter One of Exit Strategy (i.e. the previous book) made a point of exiting a ship via a non-dock airlock, wandering around the outside of a station for a bit while chatting to cargo bots, and then making an unobtrusive entrance. As it was, screaming "YOU DID THIS LAST BOOK" in my head rather undermined a key plot point.

That grumble notwithstanding, I did very much enjoy this and am glad to have read it and it gets to go back into the stack of Comfort Reads, because I love this autistic cyborg a lot and also want them to go and hang out in the (provisional) Republic of Two Systems.

Network Effect, Martha Wells, thereby completing my Murderbot reread. I had forgotten lots of the details! I had fun! It was exactly what I wanted!

Phoenix Extravagant, Yoon Ha Lee. This one is in progress. I am finding it slightly hard going, for reasons I cannot articulate but which probably have no small amount to do with my attention span, but I am finding that the story is sticking with me and I'm thinking about it A Lot even while I'm not actually reading it. I have also mostly got over having confused it with the YA book, and am mostly not startled every time it stops being YA. Any more.

Writing. As I write this I am babysitting the printer while it DISGORGES the DRAFT of my THESIS for PROOF-READING. I have been making lots of little fiddly edits, but nothing especially substantial -- but oh my goodness am I having feelings about it being a physical thing in the world.

Creating. I have been messing around with watercolour pencils as I iterate over creating a schematic illustration of a volcano! And enjoying it a lot, and gearing up to perhaps do... More. We will see if I have time to reinvent the other cartoon in this thesis while I'm at it. I am learning a bunch and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Growing. Some of the second round of chillis are hatching, as have three of the aubergine!

Observing. A blue tit! I knew they existed in the vicinity but had never seen one around these parts, but lo, it was considering building a nest under upstairs' balcony balanced on our external power sockets! Alas I think we scared it off, but regardless it seems to have decided that's a Bad Idea and retreated once more to the hedges.

After I printed out my Master's thesis, lo these many many years ago, I dropped the stack of pages from a small height just to hear the weight of my work hit the floor.
