tiny magic

I am sure I have asked you all about your tiny magics before, but I would be interested in hearing them again.

Mine is a tiny charity shop magic. A asked me, the other day, if given the magic I could keep my eye out for another pair of cheap work shoes and another pair of cheap driving shoes for him. So, of course, there were four plausible pairs of shoes, for a fiver each, in the first charity shop I visited.

Today's tiny charity shop magic was instead for myself: a black-blue-purple striped shirt, a peacock blue 80% cotton-20% acrylic (i.e. non-allergenic) V-neck pullover, and the second (& only the second) Mortal Engines book, having already acquired and read the first.

Mine at the moment is a magic of having buses arrive exactly when I need them. Even when it expires it will have given me a very stress-free few months!

It hasn't happened for a while now, but when I was foraging regularly, I would also regularly find random, abandoned food on the street. Hauls included a large bag of overripe-but-still-good pears; an orange; unopened boxes of crackers or cereal; and on one memorable occasion, most of a 25kg sack of large potatoes.

Hmm. I'm not sure what mine is, but my mom has an uncanny ability to win things in raffles.

Mine is finding lost things, especially keys dropped by other people, and tiny weeny valuable pieces of metal on floors, which is very handy given my job.
watersword: Keira Knightley, in Pride and Prejudice (2007), turning her head away from the viewer, the word "elizabeth" written near (Default)

I have never once fucked up a recipe by tweaking it. I have fucked up for other reasons (the mysteriously too-salty muffin batter, the discovery the freshly-purchased fish was revolting, etc., etc.), but never because I have changed something.

Oooh that is excellent magic.

I’m not sure I can think of a useful tiny magic of my own.

But I do like the way I move through the world – never in a straight line from A to B, but with a mixture of twirls, dances, and hand motions. There’s a combination of grace and flare that makes me feel happy and magical. (I’m sure there are better words to describe what I mean, but my brain is failing me tonight.)

My mom has this magic, which is why I have a full set of dishes and silverware and a comfy chair and bookcases..........

It's pretty useful!

That's a good magic.
Mine is quite dull but useful at work: computers often do as they're told if I'm watching.

I don't know if I have any? I have some non-tiny magics, but my stuff is much more it-could-only-happen-to-me style superpowers, because there are often negative versions as well as positive. (Largely: accidental and surprising school milestones, both positive and negative, as well as making good friends with work bosses. It does not keep them from firing me, but does mean we often are friends even after that.)
silveradept: A kodama with a trombone. The trombone is playing music, even though it is held in a rest position (Default)

Good magic, that.

My tiny magic seems to be "if there is an opportunity for (mostly harmless) comedy at my expense when I say, and possibly even think, something, prepare to laugh."

magic, and fortunately for me, one MyGuy also shares.

I am very lucky when it comes to analogies on the fly.

I was able to explain why XML is helpful to my father:
- suppose books were like fixed-field Hollerith cards
- and there weren't any page numbers
- to use the table of contents you'd have to count each page (twice for each sheet)
