I'm slightly teary at this introduction, you know. You have picked things to praise that I do take pride in, but aren't usually foregrounded in how I think of myself, so I'm extremely touched and flattered. Not shy about learning in public, yes, that is one of my characteristics, and I hadn't thought about why it might be a good thing. And yay for being recommended ♥

surpassingly wins the prize for most doggedly persistent belief that the world can be a good and beautiful thing, and for pursuing that apparently No Matter What.

This includes, of course, making the world into a good and beautiful thing, when all else fails. surpassingly is rebuilding their life from the ground up with grace and panache and people to catch them when they stumble, which one doesn't get for nothing; and they pour art & compassion & kindness into the world, and every time they teach me a little bit more about how to live and how to live well.

Ross is a pilot and a magician with sound tech and a conference organiser and a perpetrator of beautiful photography and a Person Who Can DIY & is constantly, constantly learning.

And encouraging me in same! Be it reminding me that people can take a deep breath and pick up qualifications in something they've always been interested in and use 'em, or encouraging me in my baby steps w/ photography in turn, this is One Cool Multi-Talented Person It Is Good To Have Around. :-)

This, right here, is someone who knows about family and rooting oneself and the weird experiences of immigration. She is an awesome scientist and an awesome fan and generally amazing; I am struck over and over again by her activism and her compassion and her willingness to share her life, and especially the small quiet moments of joy. I am much the richer, and much the happier, for reading nanila's DW.

It is not at all uncommon for them to say something that makes me feel as though my head has been opened up, given a good stir and a squirt of oil, and put back together working better.

And also: superlative commentary; amazing linkspams, particularly on topics where I bury my head in my hands and try to pretend the world isn't happening, for which I am eternally grateful; & they share gladly of the joy & whimsy of their days. Seriously good folk.

Fights the world tooth and nail to get the things they want out of it, with a frankly awe-inspiring level of grit and determination and refusal to give up. So much of school and of university was, for me, about learning that learning in public was unacceptable, and making mistakes in public was unacceptable, to the point that I was heartily congratulated by the professor running a practical at one point when I went up to a demonstrator and said "I need help. I don't understand this exercise." "Okay, what don't you understand?" "Any of it."

So -- yes, it is hugely valuable, and you are an all-round good thing, and -- thank you. For everything. I am so glad you liked your introduction, and so glad that you invented this meme, because as is probably obvious to you a lot of other people are getting things out of it too (not just the ones who comment to say thank you -- I've also been getting IMs & e-mails of gratitude, so -- again, thank you for making the world a better place).

I am genuinely impressed by anyone who can deal with me suddenly and unexpectedly stumbling into a full-blown public freakout, let alone people who can do it with grace.

He's also good with helping people through panic attacks. I speak from personal experience on this matter.
