The Witch Roads, by Kate Elliott
Review copy provided by the publisher.
This is the first book in a duology, and it's the kind of duology that's really one book split into two volumes. The end of this book is merely the stopping point of this book, not in any way an ending. If that bothers you, wait around until the other half is out.
Honestly I can't tell you why I didn't love this book. I wanted to love this book. It's a secondary world fantasy where one of the central relationships of the book is an aunt and nephew, and that kind of non-standard central relationship is absolutely up my alley. It's a fantasy world where magical environmental contamination is a major threat, which is also of great interest to me. Sensitive yet matter-of-fact handling of trans characters, check. Worldbuilding that deviates from standard, check. And there wasn't anything that made me roll my eyes or say ugh! It was just fine! But for me, at least, it was just fine. Honestly if this is your sort of thing I kind of wish you'd read it and tell me what you think might have been going on here, or if it's just...that some books and some people are ships passing in the night.

Whales
Newly documented behavior in a recently published paper by SETI Institute and UC Davis team members may offer insights into nonhuman intelligence--and help shape the search for life beyond Earth.
Humpback whales have been observed blowing bubble rings during friendly interactions with humans a behavior never before documented. This surprising display may be more than play; it could represent a sophisticated form of non-verbal communication. Scientists from the SETI Institute and UC Davis believe these interactions offer valuable insights into non-human intelligence, potentially helping refine our methods for detecting extraterrestrial life. Their findings underscore the intelligence, curiosity, and social complexity of whales, making them ideal analogues for developing communication models beyond Earth.

Belgium v Wales: World Cup 2026 qualifier – live
Updates from the Group J match; kick-off 7.45pm BST
Joe Morrell, currently without a club, aged 28 and who played for Wales at the last World Cup, isn’t featuring tonight. But this was still an excellent interview last week with the Welsh midfielder.
One potential mis-match for Wales is at left back. Ben Davies is about as dependable as they come but should the lightning quick Jérémy Doku drift out to Belgium’s right wing, he might be able to breeze straight past the veteran defender, who is more accustomed to playing centre back these days. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Doku and Leandro Trossard swap wings for Belgium as the game goes on.

Glastonbury sells ‘a few thousand less tickets’ to avoid overcrowding
Festival organiser Emily Eavis says other changes include Shangri-La area ‘going full trees and green space’
Glastonbury festival is known for its huge crowds, but last year overcrowding at smaller stages led to areas being closed off to prevent crowd crushes and one act was even forced to halt their set.
In an attempt to avoid a repeat of last year’s safety concerns, the festival has sold “a few thousand less tickets” for this month’s event, the organiser Emily Eavis has said.

Plastic surgeon jailed for life over attempted murder of fellow doctor
Peter Brooks, 61, doused petrol on floor of Graeme Perks’s Nottinghamshire home before stabbing him in abdomen
A plastic surgeon who attempted to murder a colleague he “hated” has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 22 years.
Jonathan Peter Brooks, 61, known as Peter, who specialised in treating burn scars, broke into the Nottinghamshire home of Graeme Perks in the middle of the night on 14 January 2021 wearing camouflage gear and doused the floor with petrol with the intention of setting it alight.

Winter fuel payments threshold to rise to £35,000, Rachel Reeves announces
Change means about 7.5 million pensioners in England and Wales who lost out on payment will have it restored
All pensioners with an income of £35,000 or less a year will have the winter fuel payment restored in full after Rachel Reeves finally responded to the furious backlash to the government’s most unpopular policy to date.
But while the reversal was welcomed by Labour MPs worried about pensioner poverty and the political toxicity of the issue, there were concerns the £1.25bn price tag would mean more tax rises or spending cuts this autumn.

Russia could be ready to attack Nato within five years, says secretary general
In speech in London Mark Rutte says he expects alliance members to agree to raise military spending to 5% of GDP
Russia could be ready to attack Nato within five years and leaders of the western alliance are expected to agree to increase military spending to 5% of GDP later this month to contain the threat, the alliance’s secretary general has said.
Mark Rutte said in a speech in London on Monday that Nato needed “a quantum leap in our collective defence”, which would include significant rearmament to deter an increasingly militarised Russia.

Reeves struggles to explain the genius of Labour’s winter fuel payment U-turn | John Crace
Chancellor reluctantly tries to smooth things over but looks as if she can’t quite believe some of the nonsense she is saying
Mmmm. That went well, didn’t it? One of the first things Labour did after winning the election was to cut the winter fuel allowance (WFA) for most pensioners. To show that they were strong. A signal to the bond markets that they would take the tough decisions to balance the Treasury books.
And it was just one of those things if a handful of old people decided to die of hypothermia. They were dying in a good cause. Pour encourager les autres. Let no one take being warm for granted again. Time for some proper pensioner gratitude.

Public perceptions of Starmer and Farage are perhaps a bit hazy
Polling shows disconnect between voter perception and leaders’ backgrounds as Reform gains ground in Labour heartlands
The optics could hardly be more different. On one stage, Nigel Farage was in a Welsh former steel town talking about reopening coalmines. On another, Keir Starmer enjoyed a cosy chat with a tech multi-billionaire wearing a £7,000 leather jacket.
Does this therefore show that the Reform UK leader has been successful in, to use his words, parking his tanks on Labour’s lawn and becoming the voice of working people? As ever in politics, it’s all a bit more complicated.

Birdfeeding
I fed the birds. I haven't seen much activity today though.
I put out water for the birds.
On the old picnic table, a cucumber is blooming.
EDIT 6/9/23 -- I did the indoor setup for the two jugs I'll be using to make comfrey liquid fertilizer, and took pictures.
EDIT 6/9/23 -- I tore up a handful of comfrey leaves for the first jug, put them in it, and filled the rest of the way with water. If it works, this will produce a dilute solution of liquid fertilizer.
EDIT 6/9/23 -- I started filling the second jug. This one needs to be entirely full of comfrey leaves. I only got about halfway before I ran out of energy. I'll have to work on it more later.
I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus two mourning doves.
EDIT 6/9/23 -- We went out to Fox Ridge and Lake Charleston. So many things are blooming! :D
EDIT 6/9/23 -- I added more comfrey leaves to the second jug. It's mostly full now, but not tightly packed, so it still needs more leaves stuffed in.
EDIT 6/9/23 -- I added more comfrey leaves to the second jug. While it's possible to push down the mass, it springs back immediately, making it hard to keep additional material inside. I'll call it done for now. If the stuff wilts down by tomorrow, I may add more then.
As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

The Bethesda Declaration
As reported today here at Science, hundreds of scientists and staffers have signed the "Bethesda Declaration" in protest of the politicization of science and science funding at the NIH. As a look at the last few weeks of posting around here will make clear, I wholeheartedly support this move, and I can only admire the courage and conviction of the people making it: there are a great many NIH people who are publicly willing to put their names to this, even though they know how it's likely to be received. Let's hope that courage is indeed contagious.
The statement is in the form of a "Dear Dr. Bhattacharya" letter, and I'm sure that no one is expecting for him to read it, slap his forehead, and realize the error of his ways. But these complaints and the principles behind them have to be stated clearly and publicly so that no one involved can pretend that they haven't heard about them or weren't warned, and so that the huge numbers of people who haven't heard about the disastrous attacks on federally funded science in general have a better chance of being made aware of what's happening, and what the Trump administration is trying to do to us all. And I do mean "us all" - not just people working at the NIH, not just biomedical scientists with government funding, and not just scientists in general (although all those groups are in line for immediate attack). The moves against the NIH, the NSF, and the other federally funded science agencies will absolutely hurt the United States as a nation - its economy, its people, and its standing in the world - and will go on to hurt others around the globe.
Here's a place to sign a public declaration of support for the document and its signers, and I added my name immediately. Note that you have to scroll down a bit just to get past all the recent Nobel laureates! Please consider adding your name to it (there's an option to be on an anonymous portion if you fear retribution). Stand up and be counted, and good luck to us all.
