It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Black cockatoos

Christmas Eve last year:

Went outside my parents' house and heard a bird call that didn't fit. Took me a minute to realise that it was a yellow-tailed black cockatoo call. Not something I normally hear/see near my parents' house in Australia. Quickly grabbed my sis' camera with her awesome zoom lens to get photos, as the two cockatoos were pretty high in the banksia (I think) tree.

Black Cockatoo nomming on a banksia nut, beak on to the camera

Lots of stuff happening this week!
  • Nests have migrated again. Visit your local nests & see what's out there. Note: The Silph Road has deactivated nest reports for water 'mon during the Water Festival.

  • Shiny 'mon are now live in-game! So far, it's just Magikarp (gold) and Gyarados (red). Don't know what shiny 'mon are? Here's an FAQ.

  • I'm unclear as to whether this is only for the duration of the Water Festival but a magikarp hat has been added to the avatar customization options.

I'll be putting up a free-for-all thread this weekend!

DEAR HARRIETTE: My cousin and I have been close for all my life. We are about the same age, and we go to the same college. We applied to all the same schools and even have the same major. It has been fun having her to share the college experience with.

This morning, I received a text message from my cousin asking me to write a research paper for her. She offered me compensation for this. I was stunned. I have never even thought about having someone else do my work. I warned her about plagiarism and that her academic integrity is being placed on the line. How can I get the point across that she should never try to get out of doing her own work? -- Not Your Words, Syracuse, New York

DEAR NOT YOUR WORDS: It is doubtful that you can change your cousin’s mind about her unethical behavior. What you can do is put your foot down and let her know where you stand. Have a sincere conversation with her. Talk about your life together and all the things that you have enjoyed together over the years. Remind her of how excited you both were when you got into the same college. Impress upon her how special you believe it is that the two of you are on this journey together. Then, tell her that you do not think it is honest or wise to blur the lines the way she has suggested. Tell her that you absolutely will not write a paper for her, and that you do not think this is a path she should travel. Urge her to dig in and do the work herself.

Update on the Dreamhack server

Hi all,

As you may know, about 2-3 weeks ago the Dreamhack server died. Since then, [staff profile] mark and I have been working on getting its replacement going, and updating a few things.

It should be ready to go in a few days, and I wanted to make a few notes for when it comes back up:
  • Firstly and most importantly, you'll need to re-apply for a Dreamhack if you want one, and you'll be set up as if you were a new user. Any changes that you pushed to GitHub will be available, but any other data you may have had will be gone - apologies for that.

  • I do still have email addresses for everybody who had an account when the server went down, and I'll send out a one-time email to everybody when the server is up to point them to this post. After that, the only people who will receive emails about Dreamhacks will be those who have applied for one.

  • The address you need to use to log into the server via SSH will be different from the Web address domain. The email you receive when applying for a Dreamhack will state this clearly.

  • The new server will have an increased quota. The earlier quota of 500MiB was enough at first, but since then the space taken by a base install of Dreamwidth has risen to 270MiB. In light of this, I've raised the quota to 750MiB.

  • You won't need to do a one-off compilation of the stylesheets and JavaScript any more unless you make changes to them - the new-user script will automatically do that for you, and your Dreamhack will have working CSS out of the box.

  • Each user will automatically get a test database called "test_dreamhack_<user>", accessible using the same database user and password as the main database. You'll still need to configure it properly yourself for now, but the installer will at least copy the required files to $LJHOME/ext/local/t for you to configure. Later on I'm hoping that it'll be possible to have it configured automatically.

  • The official email address to contact me has changed - you should now use my Dreamwidth email address (sophie at dreamwidth dot org). Automated emails will come from this address, so if you had the previous email whitelisted you may want to whitelist this new one instead.
Thanks for your patience with this - there's a lot that's been going on, but the new server should be ready to go very soon! Watch this space. :)

If you have any questions, please leave a comment! I'll answer any questions you might have.

Which means you'll have increased chances of catching water pokemon at this time. And maybe even a lapras!
